8N Transmission

My 8N is leaking oil from the transmission into the clutch housing. It appears to be coming from the 1st and 3rd shifter rail at the top of the trnsmission. I can see the end of the rail from the clutch housing. Is this normal? It would seem that there should be a soft plug or something to prevent the oil from coming out along the shaft.

There is a good chance that the oil seal, p/n
8N 7052-A, is leaking and throwing oil into the bell housing that contains the clutch. Split the tractor behind the bell housing. This seal is held by a retainer with four screws and is easily replaced. The retainer and seal slip out from the splined shaft that goes thru the clutch disc after removing the four retaining screws. I had to do the same thing on my 8n. Got the seal from this site about seven years ago.

There should be a plug in the shift rail hole. It is a 3/4 inch plug part no 74113S and is often overlooked but should be checked anytime you split an 8N.
