New axle shaft

I am replacing my axle shaft because the axle nut stripped off the threads. I got the new axle already and had the new bearing pressed onto it. I went to put it in and the axle wont slip into...whatever it is going into inside the housing :? I can feel the splines line up but when I try to push it in it wont go more than a fraction of an inch then it is hard to pull back out! I put the old one back in and it slides right in. Is it normal for a new axle to fit that tight? If so the only way to get it in would be to put a block of wood on the end and pound it in but that doesn't seem right!

inspect the splined end for damage, mushrooming, flashing, mis-machining.

lastly.. get a set of dial calipers on and check the lands and peaks.. cpomapir.

PS.. I'da re-threaded the old axle if it was otherwise ok. either undersixe. or weld up and rethread. BTDT.. works fine...

I checked the splined end and it looks ok. Doesnt look like it was dropped in shipping or anything like that. I dont have a caliper but I guess this is a good excuse to get one. The old axle has nothing left to rethread its in bad shape. A machine shop could probably do something for me but I figured a new axle wouldnt cost much more and would just be easier

when there's nothing left to thread... that's when ya weld it up with some 6013 and then grind the diamter close and then thread it. :)

Good to know for next time. But considering I already have the new axle any ideas why it wont just slip in ohter than the splines possibly being a little screwed up shipping or something. I realy need to get this axle in there and get the tractor going...the honey do's are piling up!

when inserting a 'tab' into a 'slot' and it won't go, and you are sure it is lined up.. that leaves a couple possibilities:

size or shape...

that's what you need a measuring device to check for.

wouldn't surprise me.

I have seen a pto shaft spline end that goes into the tractor fit tight enough that it needed filing to fit.

hard to say without seeing his and with a caliper in hand..etc..
