REAR PTO of Ford 8n

I have a question about my 49 8n. I have a 6 ft bush hog squealer on the 3 point hitch of my 8n. The only way I can get the bush hog to lift is when the PTO is engaged and bush hog drive shaft is connected to bush hog thus the blades are spinning. If I deactivate the PTO drive the bush hog want lift. Is this normal? I can disconnect the drive shaft from the bush hog and the bush hog lifts with PTO engaged but this is a pain to have to connect and disconnect the drive shaft of the bush hog.

if you didn't know this.. you didn't do enough research into the tractor you bought.

belly pump runs the lift. belly pump is run by the pto.

you can buy / make a set of depth limit chains to hang the hog from if you want to be able to transport the hog with no pto engaged.. but shaft hooked up..

Yes, that's normal. PTO driven hydraulics.
Live hydraulics not requiring the PTO started in '53 Ford tractors.
Jubilee/NAA and up.

Also consider that momentum built up in the mower will drive the tractor forward even when you have the clutch disengage. you need an overrunning clutch to solve that for safety reasons.

(quoted from post at 22:12:43 09/14/13) Didn t Zane have a work-a-round for that? I know a way but he had a kit(I think)
I think Zane still sells the Live Thang that converts them to live hydraulics.
TheOldHokie also has a live hydraulics kit.
Both are active here on the forum, so maybe they'll chime in.

That's just the way they are. A set of limit chains can help a
little but they require a lot of fiddling each time you want to
change the height. One thing that can help a lot (Zane or
Hokie-style live hydraulics, which let the hydraulics operated independently of the PTO but cost $500 or so aside) is the Implement Transport
Lock Ford (or was it Ferguson?) used to make. It's just a little
strut that goes on one of the lift arm pins, and can be swung in
so it sets atop the axle housing, keeping the arms from settling
when the PTO is disengaged, so as to hold the implement in the
transport position (that is to say, up). A spring loaded block off
keeps it from deploying when not desired.

Red Rock makes a copy of the original but it is possible to make
a simplified version very easily.

I don't often see these on n's, don't know why, as I consider mine
indespensible.

(quoted from post at 21:14:43 09/14/13) Could you send me a photo of yours (block off)?

Todd,

Go to Red Rock Manufacturing click on Products and scroll to the bottom of the page to see the Ferguson Transport Lock.

I have added a live hydraulics kit to my 8N and used to have the same issues as you -- having to get off the tractor, disconnect the drive shaft to the brush mower so that I could safely lift it for the drive home, etc. No more!! Don't want the mower blades turning - turn off the PTO. You still have hydraulics to lift it. Gives you complete control. And, considering safety, the only time my PTO is spinning is when I am mowing (it's the only implement I have that requires the PTO). So, at no other time is there any danger of getting anything caught in the spinning shaft. Before the kit my PTO was always on so I had hydraulics.

I probably ought to mention that there have been rumors, mostly
from the Ferguson camp, of axle housings cracked when a heavy
implement is allowed to bounce up and down at speed with the lock
engaged. It's not something I spend much time worrying about, let
alone forgoing using this handy little device, but something to keep
in mind when one is barreling down a bumpy dirt road.

I have an overrun. No problem there. The PTO lock either chain or that old Ferguson bracket is the way I'll have to go when I'm transporting my bush hog. TY!
