Negative ground

I have a side-mount 12v tractor I bought but haven't done much with it yet. Overall it is in good shape and it seems to run ok. I pulled it into the garage and after scraping all the crud off the battery noticed that the negative side was grounded. I haven't looked any further yet but was planning to pull the hood off soon to work on the steering and maybe put on a new wiring harness. Can these be wired this way (neg ground) and still work? No sure if it was done intentionally or by accident and needs corrected.

they left the factory 6v pos grnd.

if it is now 12v neg grns, has an alt, and does charge.. then it HAS to be taht way.

MOST alts are neg grnd.

If it has an alternator on it and you so much as hook the battery up + ground the moment you hook that last battery cable up you will smoke test the alternator and you will then need a new one.

12V alternator, negative ground as the other guys said.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it until it is! ;)

Ok, good thing I didn't start messing with stuff before I knew what I was doing. This is my first 12v 8n, I'll try to learn a little more about it when I re-wire it. Thanks for the info.....I plan on tackling the steering sometime soon, which will be new to me, so I'm sure I'll be posting back with more questions. You guys are always a big help.
