I bought 12 quarts of oil and a filter at O'Reillys cost 71.27 5.99 a quart for Valvoline and 4.19 for the filter. My truck takes 6.5 quarts with a filter adding up to $43.12 Last month before leaving on vacation I took my Ford Expidition to a local garage for an oil and filter change cost $40.00. I hate to think of the cost of changing the oil in my 3 ford ns i have to do that soon.It don't pay to do it yourself.

I can't tell you the last time I changed oil in a new vehicle. But the circumstances were that I needed a special wrench for the filter and it wasn't accessible from above. I think it was on a Plymouth mini-van in the late 90's.

And I feel the same way about rebuilding N carbs. A good kit w/ a new float costs $60 and usually does not come w/ throttle bushings. And you still need to buy carb cleaner to soak the carb in overnight. Around here, a N carb rebuild costs $85.

ook at the positive side.......you know what went into it AND you didn't end up with a cross threaded oil pan! That's worth more than $3

I haven't changed the oil in a car in over a decade. It wasn't the cost or the time for me, it was being stuck with the drain oil. It's hard to find anyone that will take it anymore. The few recycling tanks around me were removed because of people discarding toxic waste there. I've got a couple of 5 gallon pails full from tractors and such. How do you guys dispose of it?

County recycling center - usually pump out the 25 gallon oil drain I collect it in into 4 x 5 gallon buckets and haul them along with any other recycling items. If I had a waste oil furnace .....

I still change mine. If you shop around and buy on sale you can change it for $25.00. I'll keep the extra $15.00 in my pocket.

I pick up a 5 quart bottle of one of the leading brands of synthetic from walmart for about 22$ when I catch a sale. So than I buy 2-3 containers. My BMW takes 7 with a filter change. I never trusted anyone to do oil changes on any of my cars. I keep a couple of old 5 gallon buckets around a fill them up with the old stuff. Walmart takes up to 5 gallons a day. I drop off about 20-25 gallons a year.

Bingo.

I stock up on oil and filters when I find each on sale.

I do not think I"ve ever spend over $20 for a 5 quart oil and filter change.

I've seen too much damage done to vehicles by yo yos in the lube joints to let any of them touch any of my equipment.

buy oil in bulk, or in cases to get better deals. off the shelf quart at a time and yeah.. you will pay.

changing your own oil usually means less damaged drain plugs too..

Ditto what the others say about buying in bulk. 15W40 Rotella costs $3.50+tax/qt for me in bulk (no tax for farm use in MN).

An advantage to doing your own fluid changes is that it gets you under your vehicle for an inspection for pending trouble, even if you don't want to tackle the repair yourself. An hour under there for an oil change is well spent, IMHO.

I too have found the new vehicles to be a real PITA to work on. An oil change on our '06 Hyundai Accent takes me twice as long as my '88 Corolla because of poor accessibility.

My autozone takes my old oil. I have given it to a local oil change place before. Getting rid of the old oil is not a problem, remembering not to let it stack up is my biggest issue.

boy, ain't that the truth
in ancient times, when most of us were young, old oil made good stump, grass removers, fire starters...
nowadays, with the white suit boys wanting to dig 6' deep and remove soil if you spill a cup,
and looking at you blankly if you ask
'where do you think it came from?....'
we should send them all out to the La Brea Tar Pits
to clean that up :D

I've returned plenty directly to Mother Earth but large scale recycling is a water supply friendly and cost effective way to get it back in the pipeline a little quicker

you just have to keep an eye out for sales and buy it when you find it i never, ever let anybody work on my tractors or trucks ect there are too many untrained kids working inthese lube shops many were flipping burgers the week before so you get dry startes, loose or cross threaded drain plugs, wrong filters, too tight filters, cheap filters and very little vehicle over all inspection or lube if the kid even knows how or where to lube the unit, checking levels in the gearboxes forget it, these days you have to do it yourself if you want to keep your stuff running as for used oil there are regional oil recyclers thet will pick it up i call mine when i get 2 or so 55 gallod drums full cost to pick up, nothing they wont take time to stop for 5 qts or something like that so find a good 55 gallon drum and keep it where others cannot dump stuff into it the recyclers dont want antifreeze ect in the oil

Amen. No has been Able to convince my 79-year-old dad that he cant dump oil anywhere he wants on the land that he pays taxes for. He changed his thought process a little. Now feels that if he burns the oil it won't harm the ground. Local volunteer fire dept knows him pretty well. Now he gets a phone call when he starts sending the black smoke signals.

I will tear into any part of my tractors that nead it. But I haven't changed oil in my pickup/s in at least 15 years.
Take it to the Chevy dealer and they fill all the reservoirs, check brakes, lights, tires, etc, etc for about $28 now. Rotate the tires when they need it for an extra $8.
I sit in the lounge and enjoy their free coffee and popcorn.
It's a tax write off to boot, so why bother getting dirty and getting rid of the old oil?

At a dealer it is probably guaranteed as well?
Unlike the quick lube joints that charge about the same?
It's an honest question, I don't know the answer.
My truck requires synthetic, the quick lube joints don't
have it and my local dealer closed.
So I do it myself. No big deal. Do all the tractors anyway.

Autozone often has an oil and filter combo purchase for about $29 - they give you money for the returned oil and although a bit of a fiddle always feel satisfied when I change my own oil.
I wonder if the quality of oil is any better purchased from the store compared to bulk oil at one of the oil change places?

Too funny! I run Mobil 1 syn in my truck, the stealarship was charging me about $85 bucks for a change. Figured I could beat that easy enough...

Went to Napa last, walking the isles gathering up the stuff...
Guy rings me up,,,he gets to about $75 and I say wait a minute, stealarship only charges $85, he laughed and says you haven't been able to save on oil changes for about 10 years!

I put it all back!

Our local Dodge dealership buys parts from the NAPA across the street.
If you order them at the dealer, you have to wait a week.
If you walk across the street and order them you get them next day or two.
Either way, they are dealership priced.
The recommended Motorcraft branded synthetic oil and filter for
my Ford truck costs me about $40 to do myself.
Plus my time and disposal of course. No where near $80.
Maybe yours is diesel? I can see that costing more for filters, etc.

Exactly what Motorcraft oil and how much are you buying? Their full synthetic is priced like gold - $20/qt is the best I could find locally. The Motocraft synthetic blends are more readily available at about $6/qt. Mobil 1, Castrol Edge, or Valvoline SynPower full synthetics at $8/qt are looking like a lot better choice......

It's Motorcraft synthetic blend, not pure synthetic.
Didn't mean to be misleading.
Costs $17.97 for 5 quarts around here.
My truck takes 6 quarts with a $5 Motorcraft filter.

In my area Autozone and Advance Auto both take it as does the local recycling center.

I usually use mine myself when I burn brush piles.

Do whatever you want as individuals, it is your vehicle & your money, just don't come up with "justifications" for the rest of us. You are the person needing justification. My personal justification is that I have welded too many new threaded bungs into screwed up oil pans (belonging to others) to let anyone else work on my vehicles. When I drive away from the dealer, he will not see me again until I'm ready to buy another. It has worked for me for 53 years, since my first new car.

That's not the experience I've had at the Ford dealership. I took my '95 F-250 there when I first got it for a quick once over. They charged me plenty and missed plenty more.
Darn radiator was full of Bars StopLeak but the overflow bottle was clean and green - because the small hose was plugged solid. They missed it, I didn't, and I'm not going back.
With time and a shop manual you can normally do a much more careful job. I've now gotten the truck to where I could drive it just about anywhere anytime fully loaded and not worry.

(quoted from post at 17:10:26 09/14/13) Or someone leaving the plug loose. I don"t trust any of them changing my oil.

Or putting a wrench on the filter and and cracking it and spraying oil when under pressure all over the underside and up the back end, even on the glass. Yea, that happened. I first thought I'd blown a gasket or something and being still under warranty I took it to the dealer. Don't go to that quicky change place anymore, even it is really convenient to stop on the way home from work.

I have a shop do the truck oil change along with all the other service it might need before towing season. I do the car (Subaru Forester) when the weather is decent, although if I can keep the barn cleared out I can pull it in there and up on some car ramps to do it year around. Filter is in the front and just grab it with some big pliers and twist it off and put the new one on.
