worked on food plots tuesday (Pics)

here are some pics of my buddy plowing with my 48 8n. we are prepping some food plots for this falls hunting season. he was using mine because his is in the paint and assemble stage of motor rebuild and complete paint job. should be running by months end. the pot on the hood is a magnetically mounted pot I use to hold my drink while mowing.

What is the "pot" on the gas door ???

Nice photos Dave.
I always like the photos.
You can always tell a Ford owner after they've been plowing. They walk kinda hunched over and to the right - from reaching down and operating the touch control lever all day.

OK, I have to ask. Why food plots? Is it to bait deer so you can shoot from your back porch? Or bait them so they leave your alfalfa alone? Or are there places where deer are not a nuisance?

showcrop,
here we are allowed to bait to draw them in. we can also use feeders. on this farm though the farmer gets crop damage tags do to a very high deer population, we can actually hunt from mid August through to mid May and take all the doe's we want.

the pot on the gas door is a drink holder I made from an old pot and the magnet from a CB antenna. the magnet has a recessed hole to attach it so nothing sticks out the bottom to scratch the hood. the drinks get warm after several hours mowing but at least you can wash the dust down. LOL.

it is very dry here now. all spring we were getting record rain fall 15/16 inches a month. lost my garden in the spring, it was under 8" of water for 3 weeks. but the last 2 months probably not 3 inches combined. hopefully some rain this weekend.

What do you plant in a food plot that will come up in time for fall Deer hunting, and is that the Deer stand I saw in the last pix.just over his shoulder.

I have the 4000 4 cylinder that belonged to my grandfather. When I brought home after he passed I noticed that the top of the right fender and the panel below the dash was completely worn were he rested his arm and rubbed the dash panel with his leg. he was a tall man about 6'2'' I guess he always looked over his right shoulder when he was plowing which makes sense. I spent the a whole day plowing food plots for a friend of mine a few years ago with one of my 8n's and your right it was the next day before I could stand up straight

if we get soybeans in now they'l be up about 4/6 inches. tender little things. we also plant rape, turnips, spinach, sweet peas, cool weather stuff that will grow into the early part of winter or the first hard frost anyway. along the woods edge their protected from the frost somewhat. turnips if planted early they'l eat the greens off them now and dig the turnip up in winter. and yes that is my buddies stand in the background about 65 yrds off the plot. we hunt about 600 acres of farm that's surrounded on 3 sides buy 1200 acres of state land, all pine forest.

Good photos. I am wondering about something though. I use the 6-way brand seeds in my foot plots. It says on the bags that a plow would cover the seeds up too much. Just to use a disc or such to "lightly" cover the seeds about a 1/4". Does your plot come up good with using the plow like that? I have a 2-bottom plow also and use it for breaking up the garden plot and would like to use it also on the food plot as it would be easier and faster.

we'll disc this up to level it down, hand cast seed, and use a rotto hoe to cover in seed. has worked well in past. the disc would do similar to rotto hoe if you get ground worked up well. this soil has lots of clay and is HARD so we plow first.

That clay stuff is hard to get through with a plow when it is so dry. I have had to drop one bottom to "help" the 8N out a bit.

I plant in the spring, my plots have all burned up!

I was going to replant buckwheat this August, but it has not rained in 37 days.

How do you post pictures?

I've used buckwheat but plant it late spring to mid
summer. local farmer i know plants the perimeter of
his soybeans with it to help keep deer off his
beans. says they like it more than the beans. also
have used an assortment of biologic foods.

to post pics I used a tutorial from tractorclub and applied it to here. basically load pics to Photobucket then use the link to post them here. not real good at that sort of stuff but figured it out after several tries. site wont let me post link to tutorial. email me if you wish and I'll help as best I can.

looks good, little Ford running good,

I just plowed down and planted my truck patches.
used my old disc plow to turn under all the trash.

sowed buckwheat, crimson clover and harry fetch.

then use my old Brillion cultipacker and rolled in the seed.

most times rolling the seed in with an old cultipacker will make the seeds come right up.

packing the seed must lock in the moisture until
the seed can germinate.
