starter wont turn over

Got a 9n with a starter that wont turn over. I hear the crackling of the cable connection to battery. The starter is grounded and connected to the original type starter button setup. There doesn't appear to be any corrosion and the battery is up. Is there a way to test the starter?
 
Dosent have to be corrosion to make a bad connection.I have had battery cables on so tight it took a puller to get the cable off.If you hear cracking noise in a connection its poor and needs cleaning.Leave the starter alone until you clean the battery post.
 
Battery needs to have a full charge, charge if needed. Clean to a shine all cables ends, dress battery post. The most important is the ground strap from battery to tractor. Clean off paint,and corrosion on the tractor where the ground is attached. If that ground is not good it can also cause the battery not to charge after you get it running. You need a clean good grd between starter and its housing as you posted redo it too.Post back if this fails. LB Master of the Obvious.
 
Crackling of a battery cable say it is bad or the connections are bad. You should not hear any thing from a battery cable
 

I usually put a little wheel bearing grease on the battery posts, is this a good practice? Seems to keep corrosion from forming.
 
Seen that used over the years and yes it can help if you clean the battery post and the cable end put them on and tighten them down then grease them.
 
Don't go by appearance alone. Take the battery connections off and clean them until they are bright. If you have replacement ends, unscrew both bolts, pull out the cable and clean both the cable and the terminal. I use Vaseline on the terminal/post connection. Some greases like wheel bearing grease tend to run down in the connection and can cause a poor connection. If it still doesn't start, you may need to do voltage drop tests.
 
Very carefully make sure the tractor is in neutral.
Then use a spare battery (it can be 12 volt) and
jump directly to the starter. Place one lead on the
starter lug and another on a suitable ground. If the
starter motor spins then it is OK and your problem
is in the batter or the cable or the switch.
 
Just to throw in,check all wiring in the starter circuit for cracks, weakness, etc. ya never know. Don't ask me how I know....
