Gonna install my sherman combo...finally

Finally getting around to installing a Sherman combo that I picked up a few weeks back. The transmission was totally rebuilt ground up, new bearings seals etc. and looks as good as new. I have got picts of internals if anyone is interested.

I have read everything that i could get my hands on regarding the install but still have a question or two.

Since I want finish soon after I start, I want to have everything that I need. So not knowing what shims and how many paper gaskets I need, can anyone recommend how many and what thickness I should have sitting next to me when setting the preload based on their past experiences? I'm guessing a paper shim between each metal shim is needed?

9N7135A - .003"
9N7135F - .005"
9N7135G - .012
9N7086 - paper gasket

Thanks Much

I'd have a couple of each thickness - Hard to say in advance how much wear your particular transmission has seen.

Paper shims not required between metal shims.

To get the correct alignment for the shifter hole. Install the transmission and measure from the inside - Use a 1/4" bit to start. I was amazed at how easily the hole saw went through the cast iron. Make final adjustments with a rat tail file. The rubber grommet will cover minor transgressions.

I would get extra shims just in case. Every tractor is different on
the number of shims you need to use, be prepared to wrestleit
in and out a bunch of times

Thanks for the info. So where exactly does the paper gasket 9N7086 go???

So where exactly does the paper gasket 9N7086 go???

Gasket goes on the rear mounting plate.

After you have the proper number of shims, pull the Sherman back out and apply Permatex #2 sealer to the rear mating surfaces of the Sherman and the mounting plate and reinstall it.

DollarBill thank you very Much. I was so focused on it being a different gasket that I never compared it to the exploded view diagram. If I would have I would've avoided another stupid question but thanks 1 million
