OT mechanical fuel pump fail?

Cannot get my 53 mercury to start - fires fine with starter fluid - I Think the mechanical fuel pump has stopped working - I attached a pipe and sucked on the side which goes to the carb - I am sucking air and a little bit of gas is getting into the fuel bowl - I would expect not to be able to suck air on that side as it should just suck up the gas from the line? took the top off the fuel pump but cannot see any split or anything. I guess if I take off the fuel line from the outlet of the pump to the carb and turn it over if no gas comes out pump is faulty?
Hope I can get a new diaphragm for this as they are very expensive.

If the flexable fuel line that goes to the fuel pump is cracked and sucking air it may not be a bad fuel pump.

I put an electric fuel pump on my 51 Ford with the flat head engine and left the original one on the engine. You know that they are bad about vapor locking. Now when it vapor locks or sits for a long time and the original pump dries out I just turn on the electric fuel pump with a toggle switch I mounted under the edge of the dash board and pump her up and start it up then turn off the electric pump and I'm on my way.

I also installed a separate 12 volt battery with a separate solenoid and a push button starter switch and if it tries to give me static when starting hot etc. I just turn on the ignition and hit the 12 volts and away I go!

You can test the fuel pump with a vacuum gauge are a gauge made for checking it...Fuel pump Vacuum/pressure gauge

They are cheap,,, they take the guess work out of it if you take the time to think about it.... No suck'n by you needed...

Theirs a reason it has vacuum and pressure readings think about it... If you can not figgure it out I will give ya a tip,,, a mechanical fuel pump does two functions...

Report back with the vacuum reading on the supply side of the pump...

BTW I am sure you have a fuel issue...

Thanks, I have a vacuum pressure gauge which I think will do the same job will hook that up and check tomorrow.
When you say you think I have a fuel issue you mean rather than some other kind of problem? I am pretty sure there is no gas getting in the carb at all so think the pump has failed as there is gas in the line.

You can fix up a gravity feed gas tank to test the engine.I can change a Ford fuel pump on a dark night with no light. The flex fuel line is probably rotten by now. They can suck air and I had one act as a check valve.Make sure your gas cap is vented and the gas line is open.Look for leaks in the gas line from tank to flex line.I have had 8 flat head Fords, they were famous for fuel pump troubles.
