That's what my onions are, short n fat. I always have em like that. About 2 inches tall and 4 around. They even get sort of concave on the bottom. What am I doing?

Russ.......why en ell ya growing spanish onions? Grow Wala-Wala sweet onions. Goin' to the Puyallup Fair and have a fair ONION burger. Yum-yum .......Dell (eurrp!!!)

Have you tried different varieties of onion? Do you have the same problem?

If yes, I think you have a problem with your seed bed. The most likely scenario would be soil compaction due to too much clay or inadequate organic matter. Adding sand or mineralized compost will help with the clay. Adding lots of compost will help to improve organic matter as will less frequent tillage.

Walla Walla sweets are great but they do not keep and you can only get them in season.

Thanks to you, RG and Dell. I have loose soil with good drainage. It has been just hot, dry and windy here in Spokane all summer. Come to think of it I did plant some kind of sweet onions that came in a bunch. Most of those died from the hot wind that just didn't quit early at planting time.

It is not worth worrying about they are still good to eat, which will be nice this winter. A skillet of potatoes and cabbage w/onion, umm.
