2N transmission noise while moving

transmission makes a deep groweling noise while moving only. Seems louder when under a load verses coasting down with gear engaged. Does it in all 3 gears. Any ideas??

Bad bearing would be my initial guess..

I have never been able to find a year and date I can hang my hat on. Some 9N and 2Ns had straight cut gears. they make a whine noise and is normal. If your has helical cut gears there is no whine. If you are getting a noise you have not heard before check fluid level, if oil level is ok I would go with TOH and a bearing.

WW2N, would the bad bearing be in the transmission or the differential? Isnt there a auxillary transmission as well in there that makes the low/high ranges? Would the bad bearing be in one of the above?

(quoted from post at 17:05:26 09/03/13) which bearing? It makes the noise in the low forward gear range, but not the high forward gear range.

New info - you have an auxiliary transmission. If the sound goes away in high range but persists in low range sounds like it's in the auxiliary unit. AFAIK the only way to find out which bearing is to open it up.....

At this point don't know as you went from a 3sp to a 9sp I did not know you had a Hi/Lo. Post a new topic like- N with tranny noise Sherman H/L. Somebody on this site will know.Theymay have some idea but the Sherman not my cup of tea and I wish I had one the low would be great.

I can only guess at this point. You will have to crack the Hi Lo open if your bearing problem is with it. When you said transmission I misunderstood and was thinking 3sp only. No matter what though you still need to find it by disassembling somewhere.

Well, we pulled apart the 2n yesterday and found a chiped tooth in the sherman step-up drive and some bearings with spawling on them in it and the transmission. I have on order a bearing and seal kit for the transmission. My question is, it looks like some of the bearings have to be pressed on and off the shafts?? Is this correct and is it every bearing? The other question is, this tractor did sit for a while and I am finding some corrosion on about a 3 inch span of the 2nd and 3rd speed gears. It does not look terrable so will this smooth out or can I buy new gears? It seems like bearings and seals are no problem to find, but internal gears are a different story.
