My leveling gear box is froze up . Had it soaking in diesel for about a month and just got cranking handle and gear out but the gear and shaft to the fork is froze up inside the gear box . Any suggestions on how to break it loose and get it out so I can clean it up and get it working again ? Tractor had set for more than 5 years when I got it and I m trying to " restore " it back to a functional tractor. Thanks for any replies .

I would try heat and penetrating oil. It has worked for me in the past. Good luck

yep.. heat it and then quench with penetrant.

can use a maul and an anvil and tap around on the fork too.. it's cast steel and softer than the steel the screw is made of.

Just to try to clarify which part I am talking about , the fork will spin on the screw shaft , it s the shaft that is froze up in the gear box . The shaft will not rotate . Hope I am explaining it clearly .

One more question , if it does free up how do you remove it . Does the plug in the end of gear box just knock out ?

OK Thanks . I will try that . Do you know if when it does free up how you get it out ? Does the plug in the end of gear box come out ?

to help you visualize it, hit the cnh parts site, pull up the exploded diagram of the leveling box. will be clear. alternately. if you have some versions o fthe f0-4 it will be in there. and in the MPC for sure.

and yeah.. 1 3/4" expansion plug atop it.

i think this link will take you right to the exploded diagram and parts list
leveling box hopefully

Thanks , that helps . It looks like there is a bearing assembly that is probably what is froze up and stuck on the shaft . I will try ya lls suggestions on freeing it up.

First thing you have to do is take the crank handle out of the gear box. There is a pin through the crank retainer that has to come out first then the whole shaft should pull out leaving the crank gear in the houshing. Then just drop the threaded rod part on a piece of hard wood and the whole thing will pop out the top and the bearing will be at the bottom of the housing. It probably will be bad.

Thanks Zane . Now if and when I get the rod out , how would you get to the bearing to knock it out ? It s possible I could see how once I reach that point but just in case it s not obvious I thought I would ask .

The bearing is a simple thrust type bearing. It's just sitting there under the bottom gear attached to nothing.

Thanks everyone , it s all apart now and I m cleaning it up . Even the bearing turns and is not froze up so I guess I got lucky . Thanks again for all the help .
