When to call it quits

Bought a 2n a few years back to cut a hunting camp food plot. Needed rear tires but was told in great shape. Hydraulics quit after got it to the property. Since then in the past two years replaced.
Two new rear tires
rebuilt generator
battery
wiring, plugs points etc.
rebuilt carb.
changed hydraulic fluid.
Now replacing water pump, thermostat and hoses to correct over heating.
Tractor is 100 miles from home and have a chance to get a 8n that is all done.
Thinking of selling the 2n and end the money pit.

It sounds like you have most of the problems worked out on your present tractor.
So why buy someone else's bucket of issues even if it "is all done"?
If you are going to get rid of the 2N for another tractor skip buying another N.
Buy a 600 or 601 or 2000 etc.
They are so much better machines and can be had for not much more than an N.

ditto what UD said.

tires? you knew what you had when you bought them. that's on you.

wires, points and plugs and oil change, rad hoses. Plan on doing that at purchase on anything you buy unless you saw it done.

batteries don't last forever.. more of a rental item....

water pump is like clutch. they eventually need replacing.

you didn't go into specifics on the hyds not working.. but if that too is fixed.. sounds like all the major stuff you'd expect has been taken care of.

Again.. ditto what UD said. if you sell that one and get another.. jump right to 55+ and start looking....

Is it really overheating or just blowing coolant out the cap after you fill it? They'll do that every time. Fill radiator to just cover the core, or what you can just reach with your fingers down the cap.

Steam from radiator at cap after short time of running. Fan blade rocks with little hand pressure and makes a clunking noise.
Radiator temp in the upper 230 range with no cool pockets. Tried a known good cap and no difference.
Running time to over heat is getting shorter.

Water pump impeller may have fins rusted away.If you dont replace it may come apart and chop up the radiator. You have warning, dont ignore the rattle.

Update project completed tractor runs cooler also now has a thermostat and new hoses.
Need to come up with a grill screen to keep the radiator free of crap plugging it up.

Gotta agree with the dog as well..
If you aren't jumping to a different class machine I'd stick with the known entity.

Lots of people rattle can 'em and say redone.

Running nice and cool now?
I picked up a cheap laser thermometer to use on my tractors
that don't have a gauge. Gives me peace of mind.
Even if its not 100% accurate, knowing the relative temp compared
to something else running with a gauge is better than nothing.
