Tks Dollarbill - It was BAD China Points, 2 of them

Dollarbill, thanks again for your patience and advice regarding my earlier post related to new points for my 53 Jubilee.

When installing the points I would loose voltage, as if there was a short of some type. After three days of rewiring, clean connections, etc. with no positive results, I took your advice that the new points might be bad.

So I went back to the parts place and exchanged the points for another set. BUT still had the same problem, as soon as the points touched the distributor, voltage would stop. More tinkering and more frustration!!

I took the points from my other Jubilee, which I use for shredding, AND PRESTO, I got spark to the plugs. Put some Starting Fluid in the carb., and after sitting for almost 5 years, the tractor started. Just to verify, tried some old points I had kept from another ford tractor and the Jubilee turns on fine.

The problem - seems like TWO (12) MADE IN CHINA BAD point sets. (Tried these 2 new ones on the good running Jubilee, and sure enough, no voltage.)

Thanks for your persistence. David

I have had trouble with new points.
What I do is file them and run some paper across them to get them real clean.
When I install them I make sure they have a good ark across them with a screw driver, maybe make them ark twice to get them to fire.
Seems that years ago one didn't have to do that.

Be better to hust throw them away--filed points usually don"t last long.At least for me they don"t..

Glad you got to the bottom of it and thanks for posting the results for others.

Here are the NAPA P/N's for better quality ignition parts:

Points:
NAPA #CS749
NAPA HD #CS753
Standard Ignition #FD-8081
Standard Ignition Blue Streak #FD-8081X (Premium)

Condensor:
NAPA #FA66
Standard Ignition #FD-75
Standard Ignition Blue Streak #FD75X (Premium)

Rotor:
NAPA #FA67
Standard Ignition #FD-108

Distributor Cap:
NAPA #FA352
Standard Ignition #FD-128

If you don't have a NAPA nearby, I believe you can order them online.

Most all the items I buy for my tractors or my 48 Chevy 1 ton that come from the china clipper I have to throw away or take bad to many times. Sad these items can not be made here.

Interesting,,, I have cleaned my points and other folks and it never seamed to cause a issue down the road...

I last washed my N some 5 years ago the next time I went to start it it would not fire,,, I ran a piece of sandpaper thru the points and its ran ever since...

It must be luck of the draw I have chines points and they took a lick'n and keep on tick'n...

Ive read that good points are too hard to file.A diamond paddle file will work on the hard ones.Friend brought his distributor in.I could not get them to make contact.Found a new set in my stash and junked the old set.I got long service out of a set of Motorcraft points. They were from Mexico.

Time for another lecture.Heres what you should have done in the beginning.Crank engine with ignition on, watch ammeter. It should flick from 0 to 4 amps discharge if the points are opening and closing.Steady 4 amp discharge says theres a short in the distributor or points. No discharge says bad ignition switch, broken wire, open coil, dirty points or you forgot to turn the key on.Hobo doesnt understand this method so he laughs at it.Notice you dont need a meter or test light. Now put a bit of paper between the contacts and see if you still have a 4 amp discharge.Still there, bad point insulator or short were the power comes into the distributor.Very common on the front mount distributor, not so much on the side mount.Notice we have no tools or voltmeters yet.If you had an ohmmeter you could have checked the points on the bench by opening and closing the points by hand and watching the meter. No need to try another set of points or switch points from another tractor. If you had turned the ignition on and opened and closed the points by hand you would have seen that there was no spark when the points open or close IF the points were shorted. In a working ignition you will get a shock from the points. Why, theres over 200 volts of inductive voltage present when the points open.A lot more than 6 or 12 volts.END of lecture.
