ever had this happen to you

52 8N side mount 12V cranks up good but after about 20 mins og bush hoging it sputters like running out of gas and quits. After about an hour cranks and runs just enough to limp back to tractor shed SIL says coil bad so replace, same thing again, clean the filter going to tank and carb, they were clean but cleaned anyhow, Same thing again, Took carb off and cleaned and blew out jets and replaced back on tractor, Tractor then would turn over good but would not hit at all, Pulled cap off distr. and the points was closed. Reset at 25 and the 8N didnt turn over half a round and fired up and purred like a kitten. I was about ready to pull my hair out but it was so good to hear it running so well. Just thought i would share this with you all. James

I've been in that same movie or very similar lots of times. Have to be careful about changing too many things at once. Use diagnostics like "is there spark ?", etc.

Check the key switch when the tractor quits running. Have found that the 6volt switch did not like 12v running thru it. Hot wired the ignition and continued to run. Had to replace the key switch with an over the counter part. Now runs fine.

Sounds like you found the problem. The points.
If they are a cheap set like from Tisco or TSC, expect it to happen again.
The plastic rubbing block wears off quickly and the cheap metal can get hot and bend.
Money well spent on quality points from Standard ignition or Echlin, etc.

Farmer.......would it surprize you to learn that 20-mins is enuff time to form a VACUUM in yer gastank and will STOP yer gravity flow fuel from trickling down to yer carbie? Many times yer DOME vent at top of yer tank up front has been clogged by MUD-DAUBERS. Unfortunately, you haffta remove yer tank to fix it. To remove yer tank, ya haffta remove yer hood. Me? I'd gitta NEW vented gascap for NAA. ($15, cheap) Simple, eh? .......vented Dell

O"reilly"s also sells Borg-Warner points/condenser. I got some a few years ago and I"m glad I did,the ones I got at the Ford shop only lasted 5 years or so,and I had to replace them this past week. The Ford points were made in China, didn"t notice where the BWD points were made, but they were much sturdier. lha
