OT--Two Bottom Plow--Ford

Sure, I plowed with two bottoms for a couple years behind my 8.

The trick is to set it up right.
A lot of people think plowing is more of a brute force operation, they run the plow as deep as possible and have the tractor engine screaming.

If you do it right, the 8 will go along nicely well under full throttle, turn the soil completely over and produce a nice furrow. There is a bit of an art to it and a little practice.

It depends on a few things. The condition of your tires, how much ballast you have, your soil condition and the size and number of the bottoms on the plow.
Ford 101 came in 12,14 and 16" widths and came 1,2,3,4 and I think 5 bottom.
The larger ones were semi-mounted, meaning, they had hydraulic assist to get the rear bottoms to raise.
Aside from a collector's standpoint, they are superior to the older Ferguson and Dearborn plows - because they have trip bottoms and because new wear parts are readily available.

I am going to plant a garden next spring and I am plowing the plot for fall and winter rain. It is two bottom, but I have not checked the exact size. I will likely pull it behind a modern JD, but I was interested in doing it with the 8n for nostalgia, but to bust the land for the first time, I think the JD will work better.

Thanks for the information.

I borrowed a set of ford plows, this model number

2x16', the third one had been cut off.

they pulled good with my to-35 ferguson,
the 16" plow sure has a lot more throat area,

they would let the garden debris flow right on through where my (MHF) 3x12"s were stopping up as they have much less throat area.

the ford plows worked good, if I were going to buy a set of plows, I would go with the 101,
plus they have the kick back feature,

I have hung my old MHF plows before and the front of the tractor comes off the ground or you break something.
note: my mhf plows have coulters mounted on them and the ford plows did not, that may have made some difference in how they choked up or not.

still the ford plows did a good job in heavy garden filth.

A decent 8N with good tires and proper ballast will pull a two bottom plow in most areas if the plow is properly set up. Properly functioning draft control helps but is not essential.

Not sure the size of the 10-337 but a 2X14 plow is as big as you would want to go in most areas. 2X12 if you have clay soil.

The main chore of pulling a 2 bottom is what Ns were made and designed for. Everything eles was just the icing on the cake.

An N would pull two bottoms in perfect soil conditions. An N would Not pull 2-14s in our stoney clay loam soil but it did a great job with a 1-16.
