tranny leak

Tractor is a '51 8N, 12 volt, sidemount.
I have a leak around one of the bolts on the bottom of the transmission. Do I have to pull the PTO shaft & drop the pump in order to fix the leak?

No, you have to remove the axle and the trumpet (axle housing) to get to the castellated nut on the inside. If you remove the left trumptet, you can remove the diffy and do both sides.
 
Sounds like a leak at the split line gasket between the tranny and the diff housing right before the pump.
Split the tractor at that seam and replace the gasket.
Block up the tranny with front wheels chocked.
Roll the rear end out of the way with floor jack and .......
You probably know the rest, dry gasket and surfaces OK.

By "tranny leak" I mean the cover under the transmission (where the shifter is) is leaking fluid from around one of the bolts holding the pan in place. The bolt is located about mid-way of the transmission,
on the right side. Hopefully that makes my problem a little clearer.

That would be the pump itself right?

Try tightening the bolts to see if they need re-torquing first. Then if still bad leak then yes, by all means pull the pto shaft, drop the pump and change the pump gasket unless there is something else we need to know like a crack or something (hope not).
Gotta tear into it at some point and find out what's causing it..

Sounds like you are confused. There is no transmission pan - The only thing that resembles your description would be the hydraulic lift pump which is toward the rear end.

Hydraulic pump bolt holes open into the sump and the leak you describe is likely weeping down the threads.

Drain the oil. Remove the bolt that is leaking and wrap the threads with Teflon tape and reinstall.
