OT fuel sender unit

I took out the fuel sender unit in my 53 Merc - gauge was only showing full all the time - hmmmmm no wonder it was not working (see attached pic) - rusted solid and float totally corroded through - actually the arm will not move - rusted in place.
I have another on order and should be here soon - my question is: Can I test it before installing to confirm the gauge on the dash goes up and down by attaching the wires with it outside the tank and then just moving the float up and down and seeing if it registers properly on the dash gauge?

Lots of smoke here from the rim fire in Yosemite which is not too far from us.

They're easy to test, you may have to mage some jumper wire to gain length but hook it up as normal and run a ground to the sending unit, turn on the ignition and have someone watch the guage,as you move the float it should register empty-1/4-1/2,3/4,full depending on where you position the float. We always check the aftermarket ones to adjust if need be to register correct on the inside guage.Hope this helps.
