9N Differential???

I was plowing today and heard a metal pop in the back. Now the PTO still spins with the clutch out, but the tractor wont move an inch. The left tire barely "pulses" as though something in the drive train is trying to engage. This "pulse" is slow in 1st gear and fast in 3rd gear with no movement of the tractor. There are no bad noises at all. It still runs smooth and quiet. What did I break? Can I fix it? I bought this 9N in the spring, it has sat outside for many years without being run. Got it running great. Plowed 1 small plot no problems. 5 days later I break the tractor on the next little plot.

The rivets that hold the ring gear to the differential may have broken or some other such thing which is not uncommon. Time to pull the lift cover and have a look see in side. Best if you already have an FO-4 IT manual on hand to guide the way for you

Remove the right inspection cover look at the coupler that couples the trans to the rear end... You can see the shafts it couples my money on is the coupler tube broke...

Removing the hydraulic cover would be a big waist of time because it would not be needed to be removed to repair any issue that would cause your problem... If you want to chase your tail and look like a fool remove the hydraulic cover...

That makes sense. The broken rivet would just touch each rev of the drive train. Rivet sound better than broken shafts or gear teeth. I'll look into it and get back - thanks

but because of the hole at the top / back of the center section cavity.. you can tell if the ring gear is spinning.. so it's not 100% useless. might make the difference between an axle or the ring gear.. if it aint the coupler or pinion.

and it's not hard to pull the cover anyway.. and just a cheap gasket.

Hobo, Would jacking the tractor up and see if the wheels turn like they should? Would that give an indication if the rivets gave way?
I have never had that problem (yet) but I agree the coupler would be suspect #1.

NO

I would pray that the coupler would be the issue...

If the coupler is turning the pinion the left axle trumpet is coming off...

Question for everyone has anyone ever seen a broke axle on a 9,2N even a 8N as far as that goes...

My bet would be on a broken axle. I broke one in my 8N about a year or so ago right by the end of the splines by the spider gears and it was acting just as you describe. Had a small amount of wiggle when grabbing the top of the tire. My thought would be to pull your left trumpet and you will be able to see what is wrong. My 2 cents worth Greg NE

After you remove the right inspection cover and do a simple check of the input coupler...

I have differentials, pinions, drive couplers and a few axles. I'm in northern Utah so shipping could be a pain on the heavier items.

there have been posts on this very forum that turned out to be roke axles. Not common.. but they have been here.

Might have been during your vacation?

I have a Ferguson TO 20 differential in the barn that has a broken axle. The broken axle has been replaced once before. It had a junk yard # on it written with a yellow paint stick. So thats the second broken axle for that tractor. The differential gear case is cracked. The TO20 was built with 9N blueprints. So it has the same weakness in the axles. You can break 9n2n 8n axls, just ask the man who ownes one.

Gotta agree with Hobo on this one.
Pull the side cover off first.
Pulling the lift cover will let you see where the problem is but since it is heavy to remove and you can not fix any of the potential problems from there - splined coupler, sheared rivitts or broken axle - removing the top cover would be a waste of time.
