well... my 1948 ratty 8N had no air cleaner when I got it, so as a temporary hack I stuck a K&N crankcase vent cover filter over the carb, this actually works pretty well, but geez it fills up fast with dust. 6 or 8 hours of field whacking and its time for a cleaning, which is a pain (gotta wash in hot soapy water, then thoroughly rinse, then dry, then re-oil)
so I ordered the OE style air cleaner and pipe and stuff from YT, which arrived today.
arrgh, now I know why the OE cleaner wasn't on there... this 8N has a front loader, and someone put a square beam crossbar just behind the engine block to brace it. the stock position air cleaner would run right into this. that and there's some ugly welds on the side of the battery box where the air cleaner would normally be screwed on....
so now what to do? I'm thinking, maybe cut the S pipe, and extend it with some rubber hose so the pipe sticks up above the cowl (with a new hole cut for it), and put a 1.5" to some bigger size adapter on the end, and get one of those 'cold air' turbo air filters like the ricer-boys use, and stick that out in the open air? maybe put a snorkel shield around it to try and keep the dust out?
