A Starting Problem

I have a 1954 Diamond Jubilee that has worked great for years. It starts fine if I pull or jump it with 12 volts. I have checked, removed and cleaned the connections for the starting system. I have also replaced the battery. It’s worked fine for 50 years, and I hate to convert it to 12 volts. The only thing I haven’t done yet is rebuild the starter. Am I missing anything else?

What do your cables look like? I've had some that looked decent. It when you cut them they were a mess inside. Replace the cables and clean the ground good. Also make sure all of the wiring is decent so that the coil will get as much juice as it can when the starter is pulling lots of juice away. Start at the battery and clean everything all the way out.

Are you sure the battery is good? It may be able to hold a charge but can't stand the load of the starter.

" I hate to convert it to 12 volts."

You're right.

There are a few legitimate reasons to convert a 6v tractor to 12v.....and the fact that it won't start is not a good reason.

If you can't remember the last time you replaced both battery cables, it's time to do that.

If that doesn't work, you can test the current draw on the starter. If you don't have a meter to do that & you are confident the battery is good, then check the voltage drop when you press the starter button.

Some one will be along soon to tell us what it should be...as I recall, voltage shouldn't drop less than 5.0v.

Welcome to the forum Don. Sounds like you're on the right path.
Have you cleaned the battery cables at both ends?
Particularly the ground cable where it connects to the frame.
Those are often neglected, as is the mating surface between the
starter and the bell housing. Both need to be clean and tight.
The battery cables also need to be big as your thumb zero gauge.
I agree with Bruce, now's not the time to convert. Do that later
if you want to, but it should start as is first, it's not cold out.
