Now it won't start

I have 12.6 volts on the wire between the resistor and coil. That's on the wire when disconnected from coil. When I connect it to the coil post the voltage drops to 5 volts. That's on the new coil and the old coil. With the coil off and in my hand it reads 12.6 in and out of coil. What am I doing wrong?????

Others with more knowledge will chime in with more detail, but what you have sounds right. With no points in circuit you should show battery voltage. with points closed the voltage drops real low.

I'm sorry, I should have said I have EI, not points. Something is taking 7 volts away but I don't know what. The next 2 connections are the pigtail and flat spring. I may take the dist. back off and put the coil on.

NOTHING, assuming the breaker points are closed and completing a circuit through the coil to ground. The resistor is doing it's job and limiting current through the coil and dropping the voltage to 5 Volts.

If the points are OPEN with those readings, you have a short to ground in the breaker plate/breaker point area.

As I said I have EI instead of points but think your right about the short. Guess I better pull the dist. But don't understand why I have spark on every plug if there is something wrong in the dist.

f you have a good strong spark, then you are looking in the wrong place.

If you have a good, strong, blue/white spark that will jump a 1/4" gap, stop messing with the distributor. Clean the new 437's and burn off any invisible residue that may be present.
While the plugs are out, roll the engine over several revolutions to purge the combustion chambers of excess gas, ether, etc. Double check your firing order.
Ensure a fully charged battery, then try to start using your normal procedure before the problem.

I have used a propane torch to cure a severely flooded engine in the past, but it's dangerous!

Hello Randy, I'm going to try that now. I don't have points but maybe your right. Seems like everything is ok but it just won't start. I still don't know what caused the original problem. I was going to change the plug wires but I didn't. So the wires are in the same firing order as before. I fixed a bad end I tore off taking it out of the dist. cap so I haven't changed them yet.

When all else fails, hook the tractor up to the pickup in 3rd gear and pull it around. If you have spark and fuel it "should start".☺

(quoted from post at 04:34:17 08/20/13) You dont know how to use a meter..
xactly why a large percentage of posters need to be using a test light instead of a meter. Plus it would eliminate the false readings resulting from meter high input impedance. But as said before if strong spark, stop looking to ignition.
