early 8N serial numbers

my 8N has almost no trace of the serial number on the name plate. its an early one, with the front distributor, and early style steering box. there's a faint trace of a rather shallowly stamped "12345" with no prefix or what. the 5 is barely visible with a very bright flashlight at an oblique angle, and its impossible to say whether or not there's another digit past it.

is that typical? I'd gotten the impression from what I'd seen printed that they were stamped 8Nxxxxx for serial xxxxx.
 
I'm assuming when you say "name plate" you mean the flat spot
on the left side of the block just below the head?
All of the 8N's I have seen were stamped 8Nxxxxx except where the engine
had a Ford replacement or was swapped with an industrial engine or a 9N/2N engine.
They were hand stamped and could often be hard to read.

the numbers are evenly spaced, so its not like they were stamped with individual dies, but the stamping is very faint. I only see 5 digits, literally 12345, which would make this one of the 1947 8N's

Actually it would be a 1948.

Actually it would be a 1948.

...OR a 1940 9N.

Since you only have the numbers and not the leading prefix of 9N- or 8N-.

Just thought I'd make this even more confusing. :lol:

whale... it has a 4 speed, so that pretty much eliminates the 9N.

the steering box is early 8N style.

it has running boards, I think I read those were added somewhere along the way, but of course, they might have been added by a previous owner.

it has the front distributor.

the 'dashboard' is 8N style, the cowl, radiator hood is original 8N style (I believe this changed in 53?)

I'm calling it a 1948 for lack of better intel.

Built in 1947 or not, it's still a 1948 model.

Yeah I was just giving you a hard time.

You do know that you could have everything 8N (4 speed, running boards, steering column, etc) and it could have had a 9N motor swap? They had front mounts too!

Don't really matter. I'd go with the 48 and stick.

I just had a smarta$$ streak going yesterday for some reason.
