Leveling Box Question

I am currently looking at getting some parts to replace some damage to the adjustable rod on the right side of the levelling box assembly. It's a 1949 8N-serial no. 194800

The damage was due to the back end of the adjusting handle making contact with the top of the axle housing. I imagine a little pressure caused by backing up with a load on the drawbar may have added to the problem. It ended up bending the upper shaft just below the bevel gear which of course, cracked off a part of the nipple at the bottom of the housing that the gears are in.

To prevent this from happening again, I've been trying to find a way of making an adjustment to keep the lift arms from lowering so far as to allow this contact. I haven't come across anything on this yet.

I would like to figure this out, as I plan on pulling the lift cover and dropping the pump to give it a thorough cleaning and new fluid. Don't want to do that twice if the solution is something inside the case.

Thanks,

Mark

I would like to know a fix for this myself. My 49 8n does the same and the adjustment rod was bent when I bought it.

No internal adjustment possible. The lift lowers until the piston bottoms out in the cylinder.

A machine shop could turn out a 1/4" spacer to stop the piston before it bottoms out in the cylinder or you could set the adjustable quadrant stop so arms don't contact the trumpet.

'm thinking ((what ever you call that part the dog bone goes in) may be bent or cracked. My lift arms don't raise as high as they should either, but it's been like this the last 27yrs I've had it. I'm going to take the top cover off when it gets cooler and check it out. If I don't find any cracks I might just use your spacer idea.

Sorry about the hijack Mark.

The bell crank is cast steel and I doubt you could bend it - You will likely find the lift height problem to be an adjustment or worn cam pin. Before you tear into it, remove the right side inspection cover and make sure the control valve is touching the pump housing with the quadrant lever at full lift.

I did the cam pin and new naa piston last year, but I adjusted by the fo-4 manual. I know it's not adjusted right draft control doesn't even work. I've bought Zanes jig to get it right, but that still won't fix the leveling box from hitting on the trumpet.
