can an 8n handle something like http://monterey.craigslist.org/grd/3912267610.html ?

that seems more suitable for my usage than a conventional brush hog.

With aplomb if what your cutting is not up to the hood of your N - Gives a cut somewhere between a brush cutter and finish mower.

They are more expensive to own and require a little more maintenance than a rotary cutter. 75-100 blades compared to 2.

Some advantages are flail is shorter and close to the tractor for maneuvering, storage, transport, etc. The flail won't kick out missiles like a bush hog and they won't windrow the clippings as bad as a rotary cutter.

I have a couple acres of coastal California meadow to whack down each spring...

I've been mowing it with an old Bachtold high weed mower, walk behind...

I probably really should be looking for a disc tiller so I can turn the soil for a couple years to knock the berries and stuff down as they are starting to take over.

Pierce that's a fine piece of mowing equipment you have there - Obviously built in a time before OSHA.

It'll keep you young following around behind it ;-}

yeah, they got shut down after some stupid fools lost their fingers by picking up the front while the engine was idling.

8HP Briggs industrial motor has plenty of pookah to mow anything up to 1" thick french broom and oaks.

the business end :)

if it fits between those steel fingers, it gets whacked!

Pierce,
I have and use a 63" ford 917 flail behind my 8n with no problems. it has the fine cut blades on it so it leaves a finish cut look. it will bog down if the grass gets more than about knee deep or excessively thick. the mower can handle its the tractor that can't(not enough hp). I mow about every 3/5 weeks depending on weather with no problem. blades are expensive but should last for several years. mine has 30 fine cut blades at around $5ea. plus another $3 for the connecter.

Not very well.

Flail mowers eat HP.

Your N will pull it in light cover but you will be taking a partial cut in anything else.

(quoted from post at 16:07:52 08/13/13) What do your shins look like?

what, from the Bachtold? just fine. its got a heavy rubber mat that hangs down between the blade and the operator, catches any rocks that get tossed out back. I do try and keep it out of the dirt/rocks as that chews up the edge on my nice sharp blade.
