to replace or not to replace????

After putting a hole in the radiator of my 52 8n side mount I ordered some new parts from our hosts. The question is I decided to also order a new water pump since I was ordering in cooling parts anyway. There is nothing I know of wrong with the old pump but with no temp gauge I wouldn't know anyway unless I ran into a problem. The question is should I replace the one on it now and keep it as a backup or hold on to it until I have a good reason to change it. Some times it seems better to keep older parts in than replace. Also I forgot to order a set of new spark plug wires. I know tractor supply has some universal ones.. but is anyone aware of Advance Auto or Autozone (just because their closer) part numbers which would work. Not sure if they are the same metal core or not. As always thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Best to install a temperature gauge. You can install one in the radiator hose or tap the head for one. Some folks say they are not needed. And they are not, till you have a problem.

No.....it's best to rebuild older parts than to replace them.

Usually.....but not always....a water pump will give you fair warning before it goes. It will squeak or leak. I'd keep the new one on the shelf.

I've never seen a need for a temp gauge on an N.

I doubt any parts store sells plug wire by the foot w/ crimp on ends anymore. But it doesn't hurt to ask.

I just bought some copper core ignition wire and ends from our local NAPA. They called it "Tractor Wire" because only tractors and some lawn mowers use it any more.

Both the wire and ends were in stock.

i'm with bruce.

shelve the new pump till needed. might be 10years of life left in the old pump. if it ain't broke.. don't fix it.

now.. if this was a 100% resto.. then yeah.. rebuild the old one.. or repalce it if gone..e tc..

Just an FYI...
If you are rebuilding the water pump you have to do some pressing.
You have to press the old shaft out, the impellor on the new shaft and the new shaft into the bearings/housing.

I tore mine out only to find out I couldn't get it pressed until Monday.
Another option is the other site that is nnalert's, they have a complete assembled unit including the pulley for not too much more.

7mm wire core ignition wire is Belden 734803.

7mm Terminal, distributor end with two wings is Belden 727008.

7mm Terminal, "snap lock" 90 degree for spark plug end is Belden 727006.

7mm Terminal, "snap lock" straight for spark plug end is Belden 727005.

I didn't get the terminal boots, but they are also available. The older black ones may be harder to get. The local NAPA carries the red silicone boots for sure, but I didn't ask about the black ones.
