They say you don't. I have my hood and radiator off right now. I'm waiting for the mail-lady to deliver my new pump. I don't think I could have replaced the water pump with them on. Too little clearance for me.

Duke........when you remove the hood with radiator legs attached, have a couple of sawhorses to set it on. The gastank is also attached to the underside of the hood, leave it place. While you don't haffta drain the gastank, remember gas weighs about 7-lbs per gallon and yer tank holds 10-gals. It should be intuitively obvious, turn the glass valve OFF. My 9-yo son helped me remove my hood, just slow and eazy over the front axle to the sawhorses. ........Dell

If you try it wear gloves. If you hit the back of your hand on the radiator fins it will tear the skin off. BTDT. It can be done with the hood and radiator not removed but it is less trouble to remove them.

You do not. Remove the fan and set it up in the shroud next to the rad. Then you can remove the water pump. I've done it that way at least twice and would do it that way again.
