OT-Price of gas

and you want me to drive my RED midlife crisis (MGB sportscar) to Whistler??? Sheesh........I'm more concerned about DIESEL for my turbo-charged Cummins diesel pick'em-up. ........Dell

I don't know what gas is a gal. in Detroit but they will sell ya a house cheap that's one way to stretch your fast as they can print dollars.

(quoted from post at 15:09:39 07/26/13) B.C.

Where in BC makes a difference: When I drive out thataway, I always gas up in Abbotsford, as it's several cents (per litre) cheaper than in Metro Vancouver.

Here in Edmonton, I last paid 1.179 per litre a few days ago, but websites seem to indicate it has dropped in the last day or so to 1.119. (Gotta go fill up before it goes back up!)

I was in Grande Prairie a month ago or so (visiting both my kids & a grandson). Price when I arrived was $1.18 then it jumped to $1.26 in 2 days, weird !

Kornfused,I hope you put the decimal in the wrong spot. $359 dollars must be a record high.

Here in Southwest Wisconsin it's $3.64 across the river in Iowa it's $3.59

Paid $3.64.9 a gallon this morning in North East Pennsylvania. Has gone up about 20 cents a gallon in the last 3 weeks. Happens every summer.

(quoted from post at 08:01:21 07/26/13) $3.659 a little ways west of you!

I Looked at my gas tickets for the mo..

7/03 $3.30
7/08 $3.29
7/22 $3.49
7/24 $3.49

On my trip to the bank today $3.49 posted for the good stuff BP... After my 5% reward (credit card) its 3.32... :D

A house that lists for $16,000 in Detroit would pay around $5,000, + or - in property taxes every year. For each year that the taxes aren't paid that amount get's tacked onto the closing price. No wonder they go unsold year after year. No money is left over for gas at any price.

I got diesel yesterday here In north east Ind. for $3.65 a gal. . About $.20 a gal more than gas. My 05 HD Duramax diesel gets better mileage than my 78 orange MGB.

Here in greater Houston, TX, where it is made, $3.49 to $3.59 mostly. We wouldn't want to discuss politics here, but, I miss G.W. Bush at $1.79.

Gas is too cheap. We complain about the cost, yet we have 4 door trucks and suv's that get 13 mpg. We drive our kids to school instead of putting them on a bus. We are too lazy to get out of our cars, instead we use drive up windows while leaving our cars running. Yes, gas is too cheap.

Too cheap? I'll let you buy mine. :D
I keep waiting for a subway or high-speed rail between the small town I live in and the small town I work in. Until it happens I'll have to continue to drive between the two. A four door SUV means I can take the family places too, or pull my boat to a place that has fish. I suppose I could own a different vehicle for every application like a cracker box for the commute, a sedan for the family, and a truck for the boat. The gas I save should cover the extra vehicles, registration, and insurance, don't you think?

George, I agree with you that we have become a wasteful society.
"We" being the majority. Not all.
As ScoutB pointed out, some of us are trying to compromise and
get by in the most conservative manner that gets the job done.
Unfortunately, the majority wins. We here on this forum are not it.

Re-reading my last post, it sounds a bit harsh. The point I was trying to make is that I have the minimum vehicle that still meets my needs, a small SUV that gets 20 mpg. It pulls my boat, my utility trailer, and gets my family around. But I mostly drive it with just me in it. Most everyone I know is the same way and some of them actually need a 13 mpg truck to do the job.
I've travelled quite a bit and I've seen what can be achieved in other parts of the world. A 3.0L turbodiesel Toyota Hilux gets about 30 mpg and still has the stones to pull a 2 ton boat across the Australian continent. A Mercedes turbodiesel will do 140+ mph on the Autobahn and still gets 32 mpg when driven normally on the highway. Performance and economy are not mutually exclusive, but for some strange reason the Hilux is not available here. I'd have one in a heartbeat if it was. The Mercedes is $52K and not geared appropriately to pull my bass boat, although that would be quite a sight.

Scott,
my point is, we in the US, want the cheapest gas and are wasteful at the same time. We don't need a 13 mph truck to drive our kids to school, go shopping, be a socker mom. When our kids are in high school, they drive themself to school in cars nicer than the teacher's. When these wasteful pratices end, then gas is too expensive, got it, nothing personal here, just making a point.

Why in the world can't we put our kids on a school bus that goes past our house each day? Instead, we have to drive them, crazy.

BTW, I need a truck to trailer my backhoe around. Don't use a truck as a car to drive places, unless I need to buy items that won't fit in a car. Trucks are trucks and should be used as such.

Yup. I rented a car in Scotland that had a 1.2 L engine (73 cubic inches). That thing easily had the same (or more) power that my wife's car (similar size car) has with an engine almost twice the displacement. It needed 94 octane gas, but used so much less of it. I was pleasantly surprised how little gas it used.

BTW, driving on the left side of the road is easy compared to shifting gears left-handed! A rental in Scotland comes with a manual transmission unless you reserve--and pay for--an automatic.

I drove on the left side for a few weeks in Australia but I had an automatic. Kept signalling turns with the windshield wipers though.

If you compare the price of gas to wages, gas has not gone up that much.I worked for a 1.00 an hour and could buy 4 gallons of gas with that dollar. Our town clerk and treasurer get 20.00 an hour. They can buy 5.5 gallons with an hours wages. The price of food should be of more concern.I picked 2 summer squash from the garden. They weighed out to be worth 7.00. at store prices.
