bruce everything cks out till i put cap on. put meter on coil top screw to casting get reading when points closed i dont get reading from coil to plug wire hole in cap when turn shaft gene

gene, take a spare home wire or old cheap insulated wire and strip both ends off about an inch. Put one end in where a spark plug wire goes in the cap and the other end around the top of a spare plug and ground the plug (to a plug still in the head), then crank the engine while you are watching to see if the test plug sparks. If not then your wires are very suspicious to me. I just changed 6 year old resistor type wires over to copper core. My engine never ran this good since. CARQUEST has them for $21 and their part # is 403W.

I had that same problem. Turned out that the interior of the distributer was pushed up out of the groove it is supposed to be in. There is a wire snap ring that holds the whole assembly in and it was out of its groove. When I put the coil on it would ground out. I put the dist on without the cap and just finger tight the bolts. You can turn the rotor by hand and you will deffenitly feel when it is in the correct spot. Then I hook up the cap and coil. I know other people do it as a whole assembly but I had better luck like this.

Actually now that I read your post a little more carefully I realize my problem was a little different than yours. Hope you get it going.
