Pig In The Poke 4' bush hog?

Just stumbled acoss what looks like a decent deal on a 3 pt bush hog, a four footer for $300 in supposed very good condition.

Catch is it is buried in a shed a couple hours away and the guy doesn't want to go up and dig it out unless I pretty well agree to buy it sight unseen. And he hasn't a clue as to make or model beyond that it has a single wheel and is "heavy as hell".

I figure at the price I can't go too far wrong, but I'd been looking for a 5' and 4" seems like it might be a bit small for an 8n. Any advice or warnings?

I run a 4 footer on my 8ns and like it. If you are not doing large areas it will be fine. If you find you need a bigger one, you can always sell it and maybe even make a buck or two on it.
I would buy it myself. Opinions will vary!!

What Dean sez.

A four footer is better than nothing but if you have a lot of ground to cover, you will soon regret not getting a five foot. Plus, with the five foot, you'll be able to mow right up next to a fence where a 4 foot will leave a wider swath that you will have to come back to.

If he's not willing to at least go find out what kind it is, there is NO WAY I'd deal with him. That sounds like a bad deal all the way around.

Remember that if it burned in a building, all seals and U joins will be ruined, tail wheel also, and they ain"t cheap anymore. Not a good deal at all.

I have a 5ft and a 4ft. I have used them both, both work well. I do not like the 4ft hog. That one extra ft makes a big difference to me. Its not a good enough deal to take the risk in my opinion. I would be happy to get 300 for my 4ft.

Agree with everyone else here... get a 5 footer and forget the buried 4'. It could be as bad or worse than you can imagine. I got a 5' Bush Hog with my 9N when I bought it about 20 yrs. ago, sight unseen.... it leaked oil from the gear box like no ones business, blades were severely worn, it was missing the section of the pto shaft that connected to the tractor, the tail wheel was trashed and had to be replaced and it was so heavy the front end barely stayed on the ground. All in all even being 5' it wasn't worth messing with. When I moved I stripped off anything that was decent on it (the tail wheel and the pto shaft) and left it in the woods and bought a King Kutter. I'm much happier with it.

Sight unseen, perhaps @ $100. but never @ $300. Around here you can buy a nice used 5' bush hog type unit for $300 every day. Even a super nice 4' mower here wouldn't bring over $300.

Pig in the Poke turned out to be a Woods in pretty nice condtion, so I grabbed it. Sunny day in backroads Vermont turns me into a sucker who will buy anything if its rusty enough.

Not many $300 bush hogs around here - I think the problem is we don't have enough real farms to maintain a good supply of used implements, but we have a lot of suburban and hobby farmers fighting over whatever used stuff does appea, which really runs up the prices.

You did good on that one! I still prefer a 5 footer for what I do, but can't go too far wrong with that.
