time to throw money at the new 601.
First thing I want to do is convert to 12v. It has to start in a cold mn winter.

Question is, kit or piece it together? Are the YT kits one wire?

Never have and never will use a lit since most are 1 wires. I buy an alternator made to fit a 1980 Chev pick up no power any thing no AC cost is around $45 with a life time warranty at O'Reilly's. Some wire 10 and 12 gauge and a plug for the 2 prong plug and a Radio shack diode 276-1661

Can you point me toward directions?
I looked at JMOR'S schematics but nothing for the 601.
You happen to have a part number on the alt.?
What do you do for the mounting bracket?

Do not have the part number for the alternator that is why I said 1980 Chev pick up guess should add 350 engine to that . LOL As for the bracket most of the time I use a piece of all tread rod and on some you flip the bracket over that held the generator and set the alternator in front. Any diagram for an alternator is the same be it for an 8N or a 601 only different is the tractor but the alternator still wires up the same. I can pretty much do them in my sleep but have done hundreds of them over the years

Sorta figured that on diagram, I was just concerned about the dash light, etc. But I think JMOR has a diagram with the extra lights, etc.

Switch end of dash light stays connected. Take regulator end of dash light wire and connect to #1 pin on Delco 3 wire alternator. Connect #2 pin to big output stud on alternator.

Dash light will not work with one wire alternator

This site sells the kit for $133. The kit for the 8N
is one wire so most likely this is also but you
should call. I have used the 8N kit on three
tractors. No problems at all. The kit comes with a
smaller pulley for the alternator so you don"t need
to rev the engine to get the alternator to charge.
Ask about that for the 601 kit if you plan to
purchase. The one wire kit is stupid simple and easy
to install. You can make up your own and save a few
bucks but not worth the effort in my opinion.

if you an't come up with your own brackets ( make them ).. then get the kit.. i'd get a new 12v coil.. napa ic14sb.

i'm not a fan of 1 wire alts.. some are. if you get a 1 wire.. see if it will run like a 3 wire.

The more I think about it, its 20 miles one way to a town with a good parts store, so might just keep it simple with the kit, so I've got everything!
But the three wire sure is tempting.
