one of our 8N's has had a crack by the drain plug in front of the starter for years. We jb welded it and it held for years but has cracked more now.
which will be best braize it or weld. if brazing will be better ,any certain type rods or ??

In addition to stitching, brazing, and epoxy, liquid glass is another alternative that offers a permanent repair that is not visible from the outside. Post back if interested and I'll give you the "How To".

Brazing or welding not recommended.

Cold stitching will work if done properly.

Use K&W block seal after stitching. Follow the directions PRECISELY or don"t waste your time.

Dave404,I have successfully brazed N blocks in the past but it's a lot of work and takes quite a bit of time doing it.I told every one here years ago about Lock & Stitch years ago and that is the only way to repair a cracked block. Do not try electric welding one at all ,you will just wind up with scrap iron.
an old Lock and Stitch post

I would just clean it up real good and use an epoxy to reseal it. Wire brush on an angle grinder then lacquor thinner.
The trouble with any kind of welding, brazing or even pinning is that it will always show up and devalue the whole tractor.
Just epoxy it again untill it comes time to rebuild it and then get a good block.
The money you spend on a block will be a lot less $ than any repair you can do to it (other than epoxy) and you wont take a hit if/when it comes time to sell the tractor.

just wanted to say I had a leak between the drain plug and the starter after pulling the starter (wasnt easy). cleaned it up real good including brake cleaner and JB Welded it and it has held for maybe 8 years.

well, we got it apart and rotated the motor on its side where it would lay flat.
Cleaned it up really good and jb welded it again.
hoping for the best 2nd time around.
