8n squeaking noise in front of engine

hello. i have a 8n that has a noise in the front
of the engine and i'm not sure what it is. i don't
really know much history on the tractor but it
does not run. i can get to run a little bit by
spraying carb cleaner in the carb while cranking
it. i drained the fuel tank and found water and
and alot of trash and rust. when i pulled the carb
down it had a lot of like a rusty red type of clay
or putty texture that had settled in the bowl. i'm
trying to flush the tank and clean carb but not
having much luck. the throddle arm is so worn it
will move side to side but the part that worries
me the most is the noise that is in the front of
the engine. it's a nasty type squealing sound that
sounds like it maybe coming from the front of the
engine. but ust don't sound like a rod or main
bearing type squeal. it sounds like it could be
coming from the governer area or maybe the
distributor... anyone have any ideals on what the
noise may be?..thanks for your time and any help i
can get.

Welcome to the forum!
Does you 8N have a front mount distributor or a side mount?
If not sure, what side is the generator on?
Anyway, if you take the fan belt off, do you still have the noise?
If your tank is full of that sludge, you may chase it for a while.
A new tank is not terribly expensive if you figure in your time.
There are three fuel screens on the N's to clean.
One in the elbow going into the carb, one at the top of the glass
sediment bowl and one above the sediment bowl assembly in the tank.
I'd leave that last one for last unless you have the tank drained.

The red putty you talk about is probably old gas, water and powdery rust mixture.Make sure the gas tank isn't rusted through. If not rusted through do yourself a favor and get the gas tank boiled at a machine shop. Clean your entire fuel sys which includes the carb and kit carb if needed. Just a guess on the noise, water pump or generator. Put a few drops of oil in the generator if it has the little covered access hole for oil on top rear of generator.

I spray a little windex on the fan belt.If the noise stops the water pump or generator are ok.My fan belt squeaks once in a while, lets me know its still there. My JD H lost a generator belt, went flying out from under the hood.

loose belt or a frozen pulley on a water pump or genny will do that.

bad bearings in either will do it.

Thanks everyone for your help. The water pump is leaking but i don't think it's my noise or the alternater because i took the belt offand cranked the engine and it still makes the noise. can the governer or distributor make this type of noise? The distributor is on the right hand side. i have clean the carb again today and going to check the spark plugs to see if they may be fowled from me cranking on it so much trying to get it started. Anyone know what the points are suppose to be set at?..thanks for your time and any help

blckdog........WHY do you think yer squeaking noise at the front of the engine is NOT yer water pump??? Quit futtinz 'round and REPLACE yer water pump.......sheesh, respectfully, the amazed Dell

And don't forget the fuel line as a culprit.... They do not last forever either.... Its a EZ elimination throw the old one away...
