Haven't had to recently, but yes, they do just pry out.

I start working them with a flat screwdriver around the entire lip. If you can't get get behind it, I switch to needle nose vice grips and work my way around.

Usually they are pretty rusted in place. They are not necessarily "freeze" plugs.

Why do you need to get them out???

Just had the block boiled out and after putting everything back in it, I noticed the pin hole in one of the freeze plugs. Thanks

When I had my block hot tanked the shop said they needed to come out before he tanked it. Easy to get out and easy to re-install.

Drill a hole right in the center. Insert a drift punch or round bar. Pry to the side to pop the plug out. Can't imagine a shop who would boil a block without removing the plugs first.

like John said.
if they are too rusty, pry a section of the center up to get vise grips on it, and use a small wood block or dowel as a fulcrum.
As someone who just had to split a very heavy, loader equipped 5000 to replace a 69 cent freeze plug behind the flywheel,
.......replace them all.....

deffinately do em all.. you've already seen hoy to reseat hte various plugs.

a lil permatex #2 on the wall if it's real pitted.. etc...
