If some one can help me with this. I had to replace the water pumt because it come apart. So took the distributor of and cleaned it and replaced the point and condenser and coil plugs and wires. after I got everthing put back together the tractor is hard to start and backfires. This is a front face distributor. I have gone through it a second time and it still does the same, Any ideas.

Check to make sure you out the plug wires back in the correct holes at the distributor. #3 & #4 are easy to get switched.

Thomas;
What 'NOXJOHN' says, plus......IF the water pump came apart, like you say...then the distrib., prob. still has coolant in it and needs to be completly dried out.. Take the distrib, back off and using a hair dryer, or heat gun, dry out the distrib!!!
Then re check the points for correct setting....0.015 at points, then clean off the points faces.( NO MOISTURE inside the distrib.)
Fireing order is...:1243..counterclock wise!!!!

Point gaped to 0.015 correct??? If not that is what they should be set at. Check to make sure you have good spark that will jump a 1/4 inch gap at all 4 plug wires
