Dearborn sickel mower

I came across a Dearborn 7" sickle mower #m 14-16 in the local ads and was wondering what a fair price might be. It is mostly complete except for the male end of the pto coupler. The knives are excellent and it also has a extra blade. The guy has a coupler that I"m sure I could make work.

Probably not a whole lot.
There are a couple of special brackets required to mount that mower. One under axle bracket with a special swivel eye in it, one on the rocker on the back of the tractor and two special extensions that go on your lift links.
You'd have another $100-$150 into it to find those if they didn't come with it or a bunch of time making them yourself. Then I'm told they were a bear to mount but did cut good after all that.
I had one a few years ago that I never did get running. The rock guards on it were all nearly new so I robbed them off of it to put on a Ford 501 sickle mower.
Sold the belt pully guard on Ebay for nearly $50 - some collector I suppose - and the rest of it I traded for a 12 pack of Pale Ale which I no longer have.
I wouldn't give you $25 for one unless it had ALL the brackets, etc then I might give $150.
If I needed a sickle mower I would hold out for a 501 which are pretty common, much easier to mount and a good, reliable mower.
Also, those Dearborn mowers wouldn't fit any Fords beyond the NAAs as they changed the 3 point geometry then.
FWIW I just acquired the special under axle brackets for stabilizer bars and the top rocker bracket this weekend.
The right one doubles as the special bracket for the mower.
I will sell them once I research what to ask for them.

Complete with all the brackets and working they are only worth about a hundred, they are hard to hookup and remove and should not be used on banks. It is 60 years old.

Thanks for getting back with me. I did look up the brackets you mentioned and now know getting it to work for me is more than I care to do. I missed the part about the extensions. The swivel I thought I could make. I typed in Dearborn 7" sickle mower on Google afterwards and got a excellent printout of the owners manual. If there's someone who might want to buy it, it's located close to Silver Lake Ind. He was asking $180.00 for it but said he would take $100. I have his phone number if anyone want's to contact him.

If did get one , make sure and keep your fingers away from the blade, just as dangerous not hooked to the tractor as it is hooked to the tractor

Ultradog,
What geometry of 3 point hitch was changed after NAA? Dads (mine),Ford 600, has mounting brackets under fender bolts, for Dearborn model 14-16 sickle mower with right side hook up for brake away and stabilizer on left. I also have Dads original operator manual. I also ran this mower in 1950s on an 8N.
Since my sister and mom scraped the original mower, I just gave away extensions, center mount, 1 1/8 pto shaft, to somebody on this site. I have since acquired a partially good mower (Brake away broke at snap, but other end stop on hand, and center upper, center link asy, part # 142703, missing, of which I would need demensions, if I restoed the mower. Can you email me a dimension picture of this part.
I am still "wishie-washie" on restoring the mower, or parting it out. All other components appear good. I could frabricate all other extensions, as I have the demensions in my head, before I gave the originally away.

The Dearborn mowers did fit past the NAA. They also fit the 600 and 800 series. Look at a Dearborn 14-73 mower. They are exactly the same as a 14-15 except for the slot in the upper link is longer on a 14-73 and the power take off shaft was a little bit shorter on a 14-73. I have a 14-15 that I use and I have a 14-73 that I bought for parts at an auction for $25.00. The 14-73 upper link came with spacers to insert into the slot to get the correct ground clearance depending in whether it was used on a N series or later 600 or 800 series. Ford also offered a pto shaft or just the tractor end yoke for those mowers for an 1 3/8" shaft. I just bought an NOS one and put on mine. If you have any questions or need part numbers to help get yours running you can ask me here or shoot me an email. I"ll help you anyway I can.

Charles,
The 3 point dimensions were changed along the way but I can not say with certainty when.
As you know I am much more familiar with the Thousands.
A couple of things that make me think thus:
1)I had a Dearborn/Danuser 19-16 back blade. It worked normally on the 2N/8Ns I had. When I tried to put it on a 3000 it did not work correctly and the whole 3 pt kind of layed down flat. (don't know how better to describe it) I tried it on a 641 and it was the same as the 3000.
2) I also had a Dearborn 22-XX cordwood saw that I restored and used it on the back of an N. Worked good. Lift it to transport position and the belt would loosen and saw would stop.
Put it on the 3000 and the belt would not loosen in transport position - blade kept spinning.
Tried it on a 641 and same problem.
3) Had a Dearborn/Danuser post hole digger and on the 3000 it would barely lift high enough for the auger to clear the ground in up position.
Same with the 641. Never tried that on an N.
4) If you buy a set of aftermarket under axle brackets like in the photo you have to use the correct hole or else the stab bars will bind. They fit fine on the fender bolts on all Ns, Hundreds and Thousands. But the hole that lines up with the lower lift pin is different. I don't remember exactly which is which but I think the rearmost hole fits the hundreds/thousands and the center hole fits the Ns. Might be vice versa.
I have asked this question about the change in geometry before - both here and on the Ford board but never got an answer. Most people didn't know what I was talking about.
I don't know how/when things changed and only assumed in was with the Hundreds.
As for using a Dearborn sickle mower on your dad's 600 I wonder if the different models 14-13,14-14,15-15,14-16 had something to do with the geometry. But could be blade length or something else too. Likewise there were several 22-XX cordwood saws which looked identical but may have been for N/NAA vs 100/1000.
Dunno...
I've had most of a dozen different dearborn/ford plows over the years and they worked on both Ns and thousands.
I think the changes are the length of the lift arms and the height between the lower lift pins and the top link may be different.
Likewise I'm pretty sure the original Ford/Dearborn stab/underaxle brackets for an N will not work correctly on a Hundred.
No one ever showed much interest in these differences so I've never pursued it.
Sorry so long...
Jerry

We must have been typing at the same time.
Read my post and tell me what you think.
I'm by no means an expert on this but find it interesting and welcome other opinions.

Jerry,
Heres what the original, under axle stabilizer and break away look like.
I will try and measure 3 point geometry, difference between my 2N and 600, when I end up taking off my 1940 "Ferguson buzz saw", now on my 2N, of which I previously had on 600, with no problems of belt tightness, between either, however the belt length is considerably less, than a "Dearborn"
I have the TSC stablizers like your blue ones, on the 2 N with welded acceptor for "Dearborn J-1 Bulldozer" and also have some current problems of the adjustable stabilizer length, between each tractor adjustable stabilizer
Still would like a drawing of the upper link with measurements.

The book I have says that the N series,NAA,600,800,2000,and 3000 all had 32" lift arms. So the difference would not be there, unless it has a different length arm installed. The difference may be in where the top link bracket hooks on to the axle housing which is why they lengthened the slot on the 14-59 and 14-73 mowers so it would accommodate the difference. The top link on my 14-15 was bent a little so I took the one off of the 14-73 I had and swapped them. It was a straight swap, no difference in the length or anything just the slot was longer. You had asked about the earlier mowers, I have two 14-1 mowers...well they are the Ferguson A-EO-A20 mowers but they are identical to the Dearborn 14-1 mowers and the breakaway bars are the same length between the 14-1,14-2,14-15,14-16,14-59, and 14-73 and they all use the same sway bar so there isn"t a difference in the geometry between them. Yes they hook up different, because they 14-1 uses the old 25" Ford/ Ferguson top link that has the teeth to lock the chain in but they still use the same lift arm length.
