if generator is showing +4 or so when running does that mean is working charging new generator
2n 6 volt battery about dead when I put generator on ?
goes to about +10 when I turn headlights on

Sounds like its working. Once the battery is charged it will read near zero.
Do you have a voltmeter like a handheld VOM? If so, you can
measure the voltage across the battery and verify that it comes
up to about 7 after running/charging for 15 minutes or so.

Sounds about right as long as it goes to zero when you shut it down. I would charge that battery up with a charger - I don't like making them work that hard unless I absolutely have to.

+4 and then to +10 with lamps on?

this the 3rd brush style with no vreg.. cutout only?

verify wiring at ammeter and coltage at battery.

I smell something fishy...

Battery in backward again.Stop engine, turn on headlights.10 amps + reading, battery backward.
