I replaced the old carburetor (Zenith) on my 8N with an aftermarket carburetor based on the Marvel Schebler TSX from Tractor Supply. The tractor runs really nice except when I am on a slope of about 30 degrees (downhill side to the left). Then the tractor begins to stumble and will stall. It appears to me that the carburetor is flooding because once I get the tractor more level I can restart, usually with a cloud of dark smoke. I have taken the carburetor apart and the float seems to be ok. It is just a hair less than 1/4" from the gasket to the float. The float valve needle does not show any wear whatsoever. I did notice that the roll pin that the spring around the choke shaft fastens to was apparently sheared off somehow, and that spring just hangs loose. However, I can use the choke as needed without any problems obvious to me. It starts fine in cold or warm weather using the choke appropriately. I really am frustrated with trying to diagnose the problem. Is there something else I should check, or does this require a complete rebuild? I have only about 30 hours on this carburetor.
Any suggestions I can try would be greatly appreciated.
