just put new generator on 2n ford 6-volt front mount dist. when running it is showing -3or4 amps turn on headlights jumps to -10 amps any ideas
what I got going on ?

Is your cutout working?
You could temporarily jumper the two wires while running to see
if it will charge. Don't leave it that way or it will drain the battery.
Cutout could be bad, or it could be wired backwards.

Head light draw more current.Stay at 5 amp charge.Head lites need more.If you see minus 4 your generator aint charging.

looks like cutout has generator wire run to bottom
connection and top connection wire run to amp guage is that correct ?

Hard to say as to top or bottom because many have been moved.
One terminal should be marked BAT or battery. That side goes to
the ammeter via the ballast resistor bottom post if original.

what 2 wires are you talking about generator wire on bottom of cutout and amp guage wire on top jumper those together ? not much on wiring as you can probally tell

Yes, the two wires on the cutout, one from the generator, the
other, eventually, to the battery via the ammeter.
Under normal operation that cutout, which is a switch, will close
and connect the generator to the battery charging the battery.
When it does, you will see a charge indication on the ammeter.
If you connect those two wires on the cutout together, you are
basically forcing it to act as if it is closed and you should see a
charge indication on your ammeter.

When you shut the tractor off, the cut-out opens, preventing the
generator from draining the battery when its not spinning.
That's why I said not to leave them jumpered together.

take wire off genny..test post with meter..my original 9 charges 6.7..never messed with adjuster screw when running lights..just chg. when done..hth

Turn on the lites.Ammeter should move to discharge or minus side.Battery could be connected wrong if it moves positive.

(quoted from post at 17:38:16 07/05/13) is it possible amp guage is backwards ?
I don't think so. When you turn on the lights, the gauge should
show discharge because they are drawing on the battery.
Just as you say it does.
Do you have an analog volt meter to test with?
A cheap one will work as long as its not digital.
Double check the ground on your generator also.
