Low oil pressure Jubilee

Hi, All,

My tractors are on loan right now. One of the lendees let the oil burn low in my jubilee- it was down about 2 quarts; low enough that the oil pressure was barely registering on the gauge. I added the 2 quarts, and the pressure is about 60 psi. No knocks. Other than an oil change, anything else I should do? I had the "come to jesus" talk with him about checking fluids before driving and watching the gauges.

Also, in the same tractor, I shut it down and the battery was motoring the genny. Explains the dead battery, eh? I popped the can off the vr and tapped the relay free. Would a lot of attempts to start it weld the contacts?

If it has good pressure it may be ok. The biggest issue is that the bearings may have heated up and scored. That would likely show right away, but if they are roughed up due to friction they will wear pretty quickly. I wouldn't be too surprised if it lost a good bit of oil pressure in the next 50 hours. If that were the case you would get that rod knock.

I've seen bearings that ran low on oil ruin a crank pretty good, too. I would say if the pressure drops plan on doing the crank when you open it up. I'm of the mind that the oil light never comes on (or pressure drops) without some residual damage.

I guess if one ran the battery low and then it charged full steam for a while the VR might heat up enough to cause the problems you mentioned. Indirectly it could cause it, but directly there is no link between the two.

This goes without saying, but don't let this guy borrow anything of yours again!!! It wasn't your new car - it was a decades old tractor that needs TLC.

Actually I like the guy, and he is doing some good things (small scale organic farming) and I'll take my chances. its not like I never screwed up and was never forgiven for a mistake.

I kinda agree with you- I'm a little worried the drivetrain has been altered by this.

I personally won't loan my tractors out. There's just too big of a chance that they will come back broken and then hard feelings will exist. If the loanee agrees in advance to fix anything he breaks it might change my mind but it's still dangerous.

If he cant check oil he shouldnt be using your tractor.
