1946 2n 12 volt alternator not charging

i bought a 1946 2n last year it has a 12 volt alternator on it but isnt charging pulled off the alternator had it checked yep its good.used to have a to30 with a alternator that had only one wire this thing has 2 maybe three looks like alot more complicated than the ferg.

Not all that complicated really once you get used to them.
Here's a great wiring diagram for them compliments of JMOR.

if it tested good and is 3 wire gm 10si. make sure #2 jumps to charge stud. and #1 hooks to switched hot of ignition thru a 194 lamp..

Rick........there are 2-common 12V-conversions. The BETTER 3-wire and fer electrical simpletons, a 1-wire. I don't like the 1-wire 'cuz you haffta "jazz" yer COLD engine to 3/4-throttle before the internal voltage regulator kicks in. The more intimidating 3-wire kicks in at about 1/4-throttle. Problem with the 3-wire is you gotta install an "idiot" light just like God and General Motors intended ...or... you can't turn yer engine OFF. .......Dell, a 12V advocate for the right reasons who knows 8-ways to convert and they all work the first time

I just did a 2N with a 1 wire alternator. it has a small diameter pulley and it starts charging right away at idle.

My 9N had a 3 wire alternator which I had to replace but it needs to be excited before it will charge and it has a larger diameter pulley like it was on a car. I never put a tach on them so I don't know the RPM at the alternator.

My experience also.

here are easily a dozen different 1-wire VRs & it is a fact that some will start charging at a lower speed than others. At least one does NOT depend on the alternator itself to supply field current via diode trio. As a matter of fact, part of the installation of that particular VR involves the removal of the diode trio (not needed). It detects rotation & switches field current on, from the battery, via the charge stud on alt rear....still 1-wire.
