Hey guys. New to 8n's and new to the site looking for a little help.

Bought this tractor like many others have because it reminds me of my grandpa and I have been slowly restoring the tractor and at the point of being able to fire this thing back up.

The previous owner did a 12V conversion with a 3 wire ignition switch, push button start, GM 3 wire alternator, External Can coil with internal resister, and gutted the stock 6V coil. The tractor did run but the wiring was a rats nest and eventually burned the ignition wire when I had to charge the battery trying to get it cranked up one day.

I took pics of everything before I pulled the wires off but my camera broke so Ive been sort of screwed.

Looking for insight on the proper way to hook the Can coil and gutted coil back up.

The gutted coil has a 12G wire out of the side as well as the Coil wire..

I see all of the schematics over using a 12v Square can coil with a 2 wire ignition switch/ resisters ect but keep hearing about how much better the can coil swap works.

Sorry so long but hoping you guys can give me a little clarity.

Bryan.

asy one. The 12ga coming out side of gutted coil goes to one primary terminal of the can coil and the other primary terminal of can coil receives switched power from the ignition switch. HV is obvious.

Switched wire from the key to the pos side of the
coil. Neg terminal of the coil to the back side of
the gutted coil. Large wire from the top of the
round coil to the front side of the gutted square
coil.

i'd like to know the number of that can coil that has an internal resistor.

that's a pretty rare item.. must be vintage or specialty. :)

modern can coils just have the correct gauge wire and # of turns inthe primary for the native circuit voltage they are designed for. though may have cryptic lettering that states. 12v with external resistor.. meaning it is pretty much a 6v coil. :) or states. 12v, needs no external resistance.
