More on front mount points

The post below made me reflect on the points I removed from a 9N yesterday. I don't know how old these points are (note F M C on the stationary point). They had been in the tractor since I bought it 5 years ago. Always started and ran well. Until yesterday - no spark. So I removed them and found they were very corroded. Replace with a new set of 'Blue Streak' points. Could not get those point to gap at more than .010. So I put a set of cheaper 'Calco' points on it. No problem. Don't think I will buy any more Blue Streak points (They were in a package marked 'Tisco').

I have a set of 'Blue Streak' points, that I pulled back out of Hermie's distrib.!! Brand NEW in a box.....would not line up together, so I pulled them.!!!!! (Standard motor Products!!!
I notice, that all of 'Standard' Auto Elect. products, are now being made in MEXICO!!!
Blue Streak, just may not be getting my vote anymore, also!!!!

The FMC points are interesting, I'd be curious how old they are too.
I've never seen Standard BlueStreak points in a Tisco package,
but if I do I think I'll stay away from them too.
I get them from the local store. In the Standard red cardboard box.

It seems to me that enlarging the hole would make things worse.Just put new points in a friends front mount distributor.Could not get over .010.New points adjusted fine.I blame wear on the rubbing block for lack of adjustment.

I have noticed that on the back of the junk TSC points it says

"Standard" Points, although not BlueStreak

Still don't buy 'em, Echlin/Standard from Napa work just fine. Cheaper too.

I could be wrong, but doubt it. :) I look for the laminated material vs the molded plastic & those have always worked well for me. good, good, poor in the pictures:

I'm gonna run over there after work for some tomato cages. I'll snap a pick if I can find it.

Well I bought them on line so I didn't know they were in a Tisco package.

I think when TSC says "standard" they mean "normal".
When I say Standard, with a capital S, I mean the brand name.
They come in a red box, complete with point lube.
As JMOR said, they are laminated, not molded plastic. (so are some
other brands) My picture doesn't show that well, but they are.
They also have a brass/metal pivot point like the FMC's.
Here, they're not that much money. $12~$14 depending on part#.

They look laminated at least.
I noticed that there is a lot of difference between the spring
shapes on the different sets of points as well.

Points run hot enough to melt plastic. Also the pix shows where you will drop point mounting screws if you dont put a bit of paper towel in the hole before remove the screws.

No brass bushing, doubt they are Blue Streak points.Blue Streak points had a red felt lube wick when I was a pup.

The laminated material is called Micarta.Tough material used as insulation and makes good knife handles.May have spelled it wrong, first time Ive typed the word.I have found many Ford v8 distributors with a broken left point spring. That shorts the points.I have two under the bench with that problem now.The photos show that points have 2 metals welded together.I think tungsten welded to steel.Hard to rivet tungsten.Good points are too hard to file.

Here you go. Live and in color...

I think Royse is right, The are just "Normal" points. Plastic rubbing block.

Standard means they are not ventilated. But the word standard on the package could fool buyers.Example, many people think a coil labeled No external resistor required means the coil has an internal resistor.Even after you explain the coil has a different primary winding for 12 volts they will argue the point. There in no room inside a coil for a hot 60 watt resistor that is 3 inches long.

Thanks 36. Learn something new everyday.

I have not been able to find any ventilated points locally, but the Echilin's I buy now are good quality. Running strong in my sidemount for about a year, without touching them.

I must admit...I put a TSC kit in my front mount about 3 years ago. No issues, I dress the points once a year.

Whats that they say about a blind squirrel..........
