This seems to be a hot topic lately. Any input on using premium fuel in these old workhorses? I know the octane level is higher in the premium, but I also know they contain no ethanol. Will the high octane cause issues with ignition in these low compression engines? For myself, the price is really no issue as I only run my N about 30 hours a season.

I haven't seen any issues with my gas tractors as a result of ethanol. I shut off the fuel on all of them as soon as I turn it off, so it may cause the needle to leak and I don't know it.
Smaller things with "rubber" fuel lines are a nightmare because of that stuff. I think it is a combination of things being built cheap and the ethanol, but those rubber lines and primer bulbs on trimmers and blowers last about 9 months.
I do know that gas smells more like a skunk than the fuel we had when I was a kid.

Some does and some doesn't. In a outboard boat it is not recommended to use gas with ethanol. At the "Lake" premium fuels, without ethanol are popular....

Here is my take on the Ethanol gas question. I use ethanol gas in my two 8N (48 and 52) I also use it in my push mower, riding mower and chain saw. The one thing I always, always due is add the correct amount of STA-BIL into my gas cans before filling them. I have been doing this for the last six years and I have eliminated all starting issues in any of my equipment.

I run BR regular in every thing I own and never had a issue...
I often stop at the BP station and add fuel to a customers car that's near Empty... I get the best mileage/power out of BP on my personal chit.. Try it....
Just going by what our local fuel supplier has advertised on it's pumps. Regular and mid-grade have ethanol and premium does not (as advertised anyway). This spring was the first time I've ever had issues with "old" gas, and it hit every poece of equipment I use, mower, trimmer, chainsaw, tiller and my 8N/2N mutt. As I said, I don't have an issue with the price difference for as much fuel as I go through a year in this stuff.

It won't care one way or another as
long as it is Clean.
old, questionable, contaminated, 2-stroke gas dumped out of small engine tanks, whatever....
all of it gets strained, mixed with fresh and dumped in a tractor's
tank here. Tractors don't care, as long as they are kept tuned and running optimally before.
(again, clean is more important than composition)
small engines, I'm a little more picky.
fresh is best
more important IMO, is run-em often
don't let them sit with modern gas in them for months.
I do 'start-up' days when I'm not busy or waitng for parts sometimes.
Everything with an engine here gets started and run for a bit

there is 1 regualr station in my 3 city area that sells no ethanol. it happens to be a premium pump , no ethanol. but every other of the 450 gas stations in the towns sell ethanol premium.
i could also dreve 45m to a marina or airport and get no ethanol gas.
that said. i run low octane fue;l. easier to ignite.
