9n next step.. Hydraulics.

so now I have the 9n running. It drives around fine the high low tranny works and the PTO works but the lift doesn't go up. How do you troubleshoot that? It was apparently working when parked. All the parts seem to have a lot less wear than my 2n. Also the parts on the rear.. Like the trumpets dont have any marking on them and I saw references to smooth axles on the forums and wondered what that was and if this was one of them.

Might get lucky and it be just a stuck control valve. Remove side cover with dipstick-look in and see if the fork is connected to the T-shaped end of the control valve -- if not connected there is the problem-if it is connected reach in and see if you can move the control valve in and out by hand--if not moving valve is stuck and can usually be unstuck by just a little pressure. Down on the hyd lever should pull it out and up should push it in.

Glenn.........earliest 9N's rear axle were "smooth" and WEAK, Ford soon improved the axle attachment to a stronger riveted design. Unless yer a certified sphincterly challenged originality inspector, don't worry about it. Yes, the smooth axles are semi-more valuable to originality tractor queens.

As fer yer lift, at ALL times, yer PTO must be turning. Quickest test of hydraulic lift is to remove the 6-in roundy dipstick plate and look fer "squirts" while trying to lift sumptin'. Report back and start a new message. .......HTH, Dell

Well I took off the plate, There is no dipstick on this one. The 2n has one though. Anyway the only thing I could clearly see was an arm attached to a thinner arm with a pin and cotter and that extended down to the oil. I wangled that around a bit and it started to work the next time I had it running. At first slow and jerky but it improved after a few cycles. Next thing is the clutch adjuster. The pedal goes too low to engage and the adjustment is all used up.

So thanks for the tips on the lift
