1940 9N worth to a non-collector?

I traded all my N's away, and haven't been looking,
but you know how it is........
Came across a 1940 9N
both smooth axles are there, dipstick in the dash, etc
pretty original except for the aftermarket grill...darn.
engine serial number-year, match the drivetrain date codes
very good tires
good sheetmetal, no rust in the hood corners
motor is a good runner, good OP and no noises
still 6V and charges
lift works fine
I have a lot of red/gray, blue, red, green, tractors and
am considering this one for an all gray re-do.
don't need it, and 9N's aren't my favorite anyway,
but this is a decent one.
I offered the guy 1200 which broke my
"no 9N is worth more than 1K" rule :)
He turned me down, but I am in the ballpark.
a few hundred more will get it.
So, what do you guys think?

Sounds like it has the bones to make a great restore of an early 9N. But like we all know, if you get it for $1500 and put a grand into it, you still have a $1900 tractor. Can't get into it for the profit in $$'s.

That's in the ballpark for what I paid for this 1940. Smooth axles, etc, etc.

Here's how it turned out.

I'm happy and the seller was happy.

If it was in Florida you would not have to worry about giving him a little more than what you offered him for it. I would already own it. The early 9n's do not show up down here very often and when they do they are usually parts tractors and rusted down to the ground. My # 849 came out of Illinois. I look for a decent early one down here for a long time and finally just bought one from a good friend of mine and he brought it to me. Offer him a little more and see what happens

We can tell you what we think all day long but in the end you have to decide. I myself would not pay that much for it but to someone wanting to restore one it may be worth a lot more.

appreciate all the responses so far.

HCOOKE, very nice tractor!
If this one had those tall skinnys on the rear,
I'd own it already.
condition is pretty much like your 'before' pic

The owner is still mulling my original offer....
He also wants my Farmall Super H...even up
SH is an early one with the belly pump,
wrong engine (H), so it ain't worth much.
But, I've redone the engine and prettied it up
and it is a good machine.
I'll think about it.........

$1200 is fair. I got one for that same amount, good engine and had been gone thru. The seller can wish in one hand or crap in other!
