high oil pressure

Just started the 9n today after a total restoration. Primed the oil pump. turned over with just battery until I got some oil pressure. turned on the gas and ignition fired right up. felt pretty good till i got to the end of the drive way(about 30 yards) and realized I had 50 plus on the oil pressure gage and oil was coming out of the filter housing and junction block. I have a new plunger, pressure spring, oil pump rebuilt and a new gauge. Running 10w-30 rotella, primed pump with stp. what do you think? She sure sounded good for a couple minutes

"High" oil pressure on an N-series is not a problem. Batten down the hatches. Fix the leaks and enjoy the fruits of your labor and $$$ well spent.

I hope you got your sprang from CNH if not its a good place to start BTDT had 80/90PSI with a TISCO/Dennis Carpenter sprang....

Oil filter housing should not be seeing high (50 for sure) since the outlet is open ended into the gov or crankcase. Fix the filter gaskets.

What was your engine speed at 50 psi. Were you going slow? Low engine speed and high oil pressure could be a problem. I would put a guage on it and check the high idle oil pressure to be sure.

I fixed the oil leaks and drove her up and down the road for about 15 minutes last night. The oil pressure came down to 30 at idle and 50 with anything above. My main concern is getting enough oil on the timing gear. I am going to pull the Super A around the yard with it to day to put a little more load on the rings then adjust the carb. I'll see what it is afterwards. It is a Dennis carpenter spring. Thanks for the help. Just never had to much oil pressure

My 640 runs 50 to 60lb hot or cold.Fix the leaks on the filter.I dont know about the cold pour point on 10/30 Rotella.I cant use 15/40 Rotella in my F150 truck. It gave me loud rappy starts and wandering oil pressure in December.Change to 10/30 fixed the problem.

I would ditch that DC sprang for sure BTDT you will see the difference (in the spring) when you get a CNH replacement.

With the DC spring my master gauge is very erratic the gauge needle bounces/vibrates bad with pressures way beyond 50...
Theirs no reason to shock the oil pump like that,,, 50 is a gracious plenty for a N engine.... 50/30 sounds great are you sure 50 is the max I bet its not and you dash gauge can not register above 50...

pretty common to see good 50-60 psi readings at startup on those red tiger engines. their relief is set higher than an N.. I think N are around 45.. though I havn't looked at an N service manual in years to verify that.

What happens when the line to the oil filter is removed at the tee and plugged and only the line to the oil gage is working.

Does the oil pressure remain at the same level?

If it does there maybe a blockage in the oil filter line or the oil filter orifice.

Ordered a NH spring today will be here Tuesday. Ran it it for about a hour today with off and on load
Pressure is now about 45 to fifty high rpm and 10 at 500 rpm idle while hot. Does that sound about right with 10w 30.

Unless you are making a carb/timing adjustment their no reason to lug/load it at idle (500 RPM)

10/30 may cost you a LB of OP 20/50 may get you a lb of OP the most important is the oil is for a flat tappet cam (loaded with Zink)...

If 10 is what you got at idle its not the sprang....

That doesn't sound right to me, but you've been making a lot of changes.
I think I would hook a real gauge to it and see what it reads.
10 psi at idle is less than my oil burning, badly smoking 8N had with 10W30.
