Generator Motoring Test

Thank you so much for taking the time, to some a pic is worth a 1k words, to me a pic is worth a million words. Thanks again.

Real good video, i was going to do it but didn't have the clips. I did motor mine and it motors but with a real high current draw, so have problems. Generator is at a repair shop for check out. Just motoring does not tell the complete story but it is a good start in troubleshooting. Thanks for posting the video.

Mine was dead so I got it rebuilt. She wouldn't put out and she wouldn't motor. The alternator shop put on a nice new coat of paint when they rebuilt it. They said something about sealing in the blue smoke?

Jimps,
Good video, I have a question. There's another video on Youtube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3oyMEEVZ2M that says to do a second test which is to lift the lead off the field terminal and the generator should spin faster. I tested my gen and it doesn't do this and it works fine in charging my tractor.
What do you think of the second part of this test.

hould speed up when field disconnected, as in video, but............many times the 'bearings' (rear is just a bushing, not a roller or ball bearing) are such that friction is too great to demonstrate this. Don't worry if it won't.
