Deerborn E Lift Disc

I went to the auction today and I found a Deerborn E Lift Disc. Everything was there and all of the discs are in great condition. I won the bid at $150. When I got home and unloaded it I found out that there were 2 things wrong with it. Number 1. My wife said, "You"re going to have to sand blast that and repaint it. You can"t leave it looking all rusty like that." Number 2. When I got it unloaded and hooked up to my tractor I found that some of the discs are not turning very good and the rest are pretty stiff. When I tried to grease everything up, I found that it had probably not been greased in 25 years or so. The grease that is in there is caked up. So my questions are, Should I paint it or does it look better the way that it is? and how do I clean out the channels of dried up-caked up grease to get everything moving freely?

Should be a piece of cake, if you can get the bearings unbolted from the standards. Those housings look to be in 2 pieces, and easy to clean.

Yep, open up the boxing assemblies and clean 'em out and then regrease them. Maybe paint the frame red and leave the rest as is. Nice set up.

You might try and remove the grease fittings,run a wire in there. Then spray some carb cleaner with a straw on the nozzle and let it soak to soften up the grease.Replace fittings with new ones and grease it good.Nice looking disk,You got a deal for $150.00.

Ditto to all the comments listed but would like to add that using a hair dryer on the journals will help to soften the old grease. Mike

That was a real good buy.
Collectable Dearborn tool like that would go 3-4 times that price around here.
You wont do much good with a hair dryer though.
Put a rosebud on the oxy acet torch to get them hot or take them apart as suggested.
I know where there is an original top link for that disc. I gave it to my buddy a few years ago but he's never used it so I could probably get it back.
Kind of see it in the first photo.
They have an original manual for it on the other board that you can download as a PDF file.

I restored a Ford 201 a few years ago. I dropped all the gangs and scrapers off of it then brought the frame in to the sand blaster.
Then primed and painted it.
Came out real nice.
I used it for a couple of hours yesterday. Plowed and disced the gardens for my cousins and
then a deer plot on my land.
