mouse in the air cleaner

This is bad. Last spring I started my 8-N, and it ran poorly. Some exam finally showed me a mouse and her nest and some youngins were all smashed down into the oil cup, drowned in oil and plugging off the air flow. I cleaned everything out, put a new wire mesh filter unit back into the filter case, new oil, and zingo, she did good all summer. Today I discover a new mouse drowned in the oil, minus the nest. But there was a ton of garbage all mired up in that steel mesh filter, had to throw it away and order a new one here. There looks to be just enough space between the inside of the hood and the air intake hole for a critter to move in. Anyone here have this problem before? What did you do to fix this problem?

Does it have the Cyclone pre cleaner? Or is it the grill type? If it's that, get a piece of rat wire, looks like screen wire with much larger holes in it. Take a piece and use a large clamp or something similar to cover the hole going into the air cleaner. It won't restrict air flow and will keep the mouses out.

I've seen that in my 9N with an early air cleaner that did not have a screen over it. Good way to get rid of mice. If mice are in the oil cup that means they did not get into the mesh (air goes thru the oil first).

Be nice to those little critters and feed them. They can actually eat quite a bit, so make sure the food doesn't run out. The cost is relatively low compared to the cost of replacing chewed up wiring, seat cushions, etc.

eed them till they are rolly-polly, but they will still condition their teeth on plastic & copper wiring & dig nesting material out of your seat cushion.

Unlikely any mouse could get in there if all the parts are in place. Hose, funnel, screen, grill and fasteners.

Ditto, get some barn cats. Give them enough grub to just stay alive (and water), they will take care of the rest. You may be missing the odd squirrel, chipmunk and small birds, but they still make as many of them as possible (not nearly as fast as mouses).

The screen is mounted on the outside of the hood, then a metal cover goes on that has louvres on it to let air in. On the inside of the hood, there is a little space between the sheet metal of the hood and the side of the air cleaner canister, they have to be crawling in there. I'll get a big hose clamp and clamp some fine mesh screen over that intake hole. If something is missing from the tractor I'm unaware, nothing there right now to stop a mouse.

Bruce, your note makes me wonder if you're missing the funnel - P/N 9684 in the below photo.

Thanks Bill, yes- just this morning I looked at that part again, called the "baffle". Mine is short about a half inch from going over to the side of the canister where the opening for air goes in. I'll look for a thin piece of rubber hose that can fit inside the opening of that funnel, cut it off just right to fit and that should stop mama mouse from looking a nice home.

The brillo-pad type filter is in place inside the filter canister, all full of mouse nest litter, got a new one coming. I can see that the baffle flange does not extend over far enough to fill in the gap going into the air hole in side of filter. Will jury rig something there to fix it, thanks all. I have 4 cats, but not around the shed where this happens

Popped the hood on my wife"s new 2013 ford fiesta with less than 3k miles on it the other day, found a pile of fibers the size of a softball around the battery. Mouse had chewed it out of the heat shield on the underside of the hood, big hole chewed in it. A few days later was working on another project and got out my sander (a mouse lol) and the cord on it had been chewed up along with the leads on my multi-meter. Got rid of my cat last year cause she wouldn"t stay off the truck, kept scratching the paint. Hopefully I will have a new place to keep things before long and I will get another cat, or several because there is nothing better for keeping rid of the rodents!!

My "piece together" 8N has an air cleaner and funnel that don't meet.
I used a piece of radiator hose about 2 inches long to connect them.
I used RTV to seal the hose to the air cleaner so it didn't move or leak,
and it fits snuggly into the funnel as is.
Once the screen and cover is on, it's nearly invisible and as far as I
can tell works just like the original.
No mice, no correct police so far. ;)

All fixed up now. New air funnel part is longer than one I had. It reaches on over to ho;in canister. I have the hair like steel up inside the housing too, just replaced the brillo like hair pad on the bottom. New oil, and ready to go.
